Basically I want a good headphone for rock. Grado seems to be the front runner, but I already have sr60 and in the past, no matter what I did with it, it wouldn't be comfortable for more than 30 mins. I can't stand supraaural, I need the pads to go over my ears, not on them. Why can't grado make a comfortable circumaural for once and make me happy!? Anyways, I'm looking at the ath-a900 and it may just be the right one for me, but I would like to know any other cans that would be good. Also, I don't feel the dt770 will be right for me because while it has big bass, it sacrifices mids and highs.

So besides ath-a900, any other non-grado/non-dt770 that can be recommended for rock? I will run em off pimeta. Need advice desperately!

Amped off of a pimeta, the k240s is worth a look. I use mine for rock and reggae amped from a headsave classic, and it sounds great. Its a very comfortable and musical phone.

ive narrowed it down to a900, dt440, 240S and 590... which one sounds best amped?

i currently have 555 and am looking for a different 'flavor'

For rock music, I would probably try the a900s first, the 590s are not great for rock, they are amazing for classical/electronic music, but rock does not lend well to them.

As far as amped wise, any good headphone will have improved sound with a amp.

Here's the info from headphile: " Circumaural Grado's? I believe I've solved the puzzle to create a circumaural pad mod for most Grado models. Will be testing this week... Comfort and possibly more soundstage, we'll see...". It's the 6th para on the home page.

I love my a900's, but I wouldn’t get them if you were looking for just rock. I don’t have anything to compare them to, but they don’t seem to sound as good for rock as they do other genres. They don't sound bad with rock, but I dont consider there best sounding genre to be rock. Also, most people do not consider them to sound better, or only marginally better, when amp'd. I don’t have an amp (yet) so I can’t give you my personal experience, but that seems to be the general consensus.

If you already have the HD555s, steer clear of the A900's. They sound too much alike, and let alone the fact that they both are bad headphones

I'd go for the DT440 or the AKG 240S, they both are supposed to sound good amped. The AKG sound is very good for Rock music, the feel is just really funky, the mids are so exciting and the bass is punchy. Mid-bass in particular (think Drum Kits) sound really good, as far as bass goes.

The AKG do not need an amp to sound smooth, but neither do the DT440s to a degree. I'd say go for the AKG because I think you'd like the sound better, and you will get a nice improvement with a headphone amplifier. Not an amazingly, substantially better improvement ala the HD580/6x0s, but close

You want to look for the headphone that sounds best to you, not always the one that gets the best improvement with the amp.

I second Aman's suggestion of the K240S.
Be forgiving with him as a basher of HD555

and to help bring the good balance back again... I eventually missed getting them only to go for the HD595.

The ranking in my own mind, in the light of my tastes, was:
HD595 > HD555 >= K240S .

240S certainly looks good but i'd like some more comparison between it and dt440. what are their differences? also ive read that 240S falls apart real ez and the dt440 headband cracks? hmm, im a bit concerned. just curious, how does sr225 compare to these?
