Well, I've been talking to Yamas, and they do respond to me (have several times) after a few days and are quite friendly and helpful. I think they are just busy.
So from my limited experience (and 10-year-ago experience when I had Omega1s and talked with Yamas several times) they seem fine.

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether the SRM-006tS could be used to drive the SR-009? I can see that there's some uncertainty about which amps to use with Stax headphones...

Ehh? I heard PJ have issues and delays with warranty. The UK distributers I have heard no problems. Can't see a main distributer in the biggest economy in the world not being any good!
It is incredible if this is the case. Regardless, before buying from Japan direct, look into the downsides and balance that against the price and your appetite for risk.
 
Back the whole point of this thread, I would always say to anyone who loves music to buy the 009s. There are plenty of 'average' wage earners live near me, yet they own Mercedes and BMW top models, which will be worth squat in 5 years, and a Ford or Toyoto can do as well. However the 009s does it better, and should last a life time of enjoyment.....

I got my 009's from PJ in 2011 and fortunately I've never had a problem with them, but assuming I would've while they were still under warranty, then rather than have them sent back to PJ, I'd have had them sorted out in the UK using the money I saved from getting them from PJ which ATT was over £1000, as opposed to what they cost in the UK.

If or when Stax come out with a new flagship, and I decided I wanted one, then I'd do the same thing by getting that new flagship from PJ.

YES, buy the SR009, it is well worth the money!
I have been building my own DIY ESHS for a year, and they sound great. But unless you are prepared to spend MANY hours in a workshop, at times getting very frustrated and tired, the SR009 or Orpheus are the only way to get this level of quality. I have heard the SR009s and SR007s and my favourite are the 009s. The bass IS much greater the the 007s and the top end sounds rolled off on the 007s compared to the 009s.

Haven't tried the XF2's or Bugle Boys with the BHSE, but I agree with everything else you mentioned wink, apart from the SED Winged C's. I have a quad of those SED's and using the 009's I found them to be not much better than the stock Mullards, but with the 007's they were/are ( IMO ) very good.

I don't think acoustic ring damper will work to well with the 009.

Same here, but I was big into headphones 2003-2008 ish (K1000, HP1000, L3000, R10, Qualia, HD600/650, etc) and then quit out, before the 009 fully revamped my interest upon first hearing them 2 years ago. I find myself gravitating back towards headphones lately (over a very nice speaker setup), and the 009 is the only headphone capable of that -- and now to a lesser degree, maybe L700. Once you're pushing them with a Carbon/BHSE level amp, no other transducer really matters anymore.
