The problem with upgrades is that you always spend so much money that you end up in a different price-class
 
With regards to the DACT attenuator - I fear that 24 steps will be to few?
 
Anybody having experience with the DACT Attenuator in pradtical use - is it aproblem to adjust the volume level at your preference?

ive used a stepped attenuator in my MPX3 for the last four years, its fine for headphones, but using it as a preamp might not offer the fine tuning required. i always found the lowest volume step was a bit too loud for very quiet listening with speakers, but that may have everything to do with the reciever i used and the mpx3.
 
for headphone use, it really doesnt matter imho, the benefits to channel balance far outweigh any problems.
