Vinyl: Frustrating!

I skimmed - but missed the zombie date... its still useful advice

1. You used a cartridge protractor? Like a Dennesen?

2. How old is the stylus? Any visible twist in the cantilever?

3. Have the gimbals ever been cleaned? If they are open to air, no question its fouled unless it was kept in a box for 30 years. It can usually be done by hand, but make very sure you count every screw turn if you do go for it.

4. Vinyl can look clean but have a lot of damage from mis tracking or mis alignment. Get a brand new vinyl from an outfit with a good reputation and try it. Same issue?

5. Is the disc warped at all? Do you have a clamp for warped vinyl?

6. If you move the cables does the sound change? How tight are the clips on the cartridge?

I found great distress in most pivot arms re: tracking and inner groove damage, so my last 25 years with vinyl I used the Souther (Clearaudio) SLA-3. No air pump just quartz rods.
