maybe we should adopt the term 'realistic' sound characteristic.Rather than seeking a analytical or electronic neutral sound.
For example you hit a drum.In physical reality, which is the only none imaginary one, the energy moves from you striking the drum to the drum it's self then into the surrounding environment ( which includes your ears ) This energy can be measured. We feel that energy conductively as vibration through our bodies as well as hearing that sound.

So in real terms that energy transfer from one physical form ( You ) to another ( The drum ) has a quite distinctive and true physical characteristic.

The perfect headphone is the one that could reproduce this true characteristic. But also a microphone that could record and capture this sound characteristic as well as the 'perfect' recording medium.

All this sounds find and Tandy until you put into the equation the 'flaw'.

Human beings :)

We don't fit 100% into the above equation.Because every human being is physically unique, we all have among other things different shaped ears. so we all hear sound differently and interpret it uniquely with our brains .

Neutrality is not a probable. It's merely a term used in order to group together certain characteristics in order so that a average can be found.

The one and only 'True' & real sound of a drum being hit is 'A real drum being hit' producing it's definitive sound characteristics shaped by it's physical environment. This sound characteristics is infinite in nature just as the people who hear it are individually unique by natures design.

Electronics can not measure or fully reproduce the infinite realism of sound by limitation of their parameters.

That does not matter because your ears naturally do.

The next natural step in headphone development could be more accurately replicating ours ears .Like now a headphones speaker is of similar method as our ear drums.

But I hope that one day the requirement for 'personal' headphones so as to make a personal listening space for music, will be replaced by a bigger more collective space of music.

where we as community's come together in music and celebrate what we have always been.

Biological Rhythms.

Thus the music becomes our environments and healthy vibrations run through our body's. And we understand that sounding Good is a accurate measurement of realism and being true to your self is fundamental in being at peace or in a state of harmony.

The flatest/most neutral/Accurate I heard are the original NAGRA DT48S.. They make my new 08 DT48e seem a bit colored & bright in comparison.. Then you have audio metrics, which are cut throat for transparency IMO..
