I am browsing through the amplifier section for hours to find a classy amplifier for headphone listening. But the synergy or combination with the headphone determines the success of it all. SO UP FRONT: what is the VERY best headphone amplifier to use with the Sennheiser HD600 below the $800.......?

Dunno... maybe the Headroom Cosmic (Reference Module)? They seem to voice their stuff to Senn HD600s.

Melos SHA-1, Emmeline HR-2, MG Head OTL or Cosmic (I prefer it to the Max). These are the ones I've heard.

You could also throw the Carys in here. I don't think there was a budget.

OK Lextek read the post. Scratch the post .Unless you find a Cary for $800, then I would give you $950 for it.

That's right the unsung hero. The RA-1.

Note that this is the new model too - the RA-1 HG (High Gain). It's designed for high impedance headphones like the HD600, and it works, too. It's (honestly) an awesome head amp for those types of cans - at least in the twenty-four hours I've had to listen to them (admittedly without a whole lot of burn-in, though I've had the cans - with Cardas cables - for two years).

I am really curious then to hear some more when the RA-1 HG is fully burned in....

I suspect Singlepower's MPX3 or PPX3 (whatever is in the price range) is a contender, but I've not heard it myself.

A used Audiovalve RKV would be my next choice. They usually go for around US$800, don't they?

Theres a Headroom Maxed out Home Reference for sale in the Gear for sale forum right now for under 700.00. I had one and thought it was great with the HD600's. I think they sell new for about 1150.00.
