I thought I would create a thread to discuss the Megatron from VE for those that have it already or for those looking for experiences of others with the product. I purchased it as the pre-orders went out at the price of $50. I believe Venture Electronics are dealing with a supply shortage currently. Indications are that this might ease towards the end of the year.

This 'mega-dongle' has a small form factor and a large power output and has been created with high impedance earbuds in mind but also does a great job driving low sensitivity IEMs / headphones. From my brief time with the Megatron it has a very organic, warm tone and great detail retreival. Technicalities are good but imaging is not as well rendered as with my most recent acquisition, the Cayin RU6. Battery life/power draw seems to be lasting between 5-6hours from my Samsung Note 9 (4000mAh), similar to the RU6, but at least with my device (and some people have encountered issues here) I am able to pass through charge either from the mains or a portable powerbank to keep the phone alive much longer on-the-go.

This drives my high impedance (150ohm / 300ohm) buds with ease. What was a welcome surprise is how it pairs with low sensitivity IEMs like the Final E range and my ER4B. The ER4B (I have a Chinese reproduction of this) having 1 BA typically produces a very coarse, incisive tone with a slightly quicker decay than I feel is natural on string instruments. The Megatron gives it a more natural decay without loss of detail. In terms of pairing because of this effect on overall tonality I would say this pairs exceptionally well with brighter or more neutral sets to provide a more analogue sound with softer edges. To have this power on the go in a small form factor really sits fills a niche that my DAP and RU6 struggled to.

I love the megatron, especially with the sun dice. One thing I’ve not worked out though is the power port. Is that to power my phone at the same time? I’ve not got this working. Do I need a certain type of plug?

You need a USB C PD charger and the phone that can be charged through PD protocol. Some older or budget phones might not support PD.

Yes. perfectly safe

Do note that the volume levels to 2 transducers might be different if you use both outputs simultaneously (generally 4.4 mm gives more volume). So it is gonna be quite tough to adjust the volume amicably so that one person isn't going deaf while the other is struggling to hear something well.

I got to listen to an acquaintance's VE Megatron this morning. Apparently the guy just got his the other day and he absolutely loves it. Knowing that my bassist and I are headphone/IEM/earbud enthusiasts he came by to show it off. I didn't get to listen very long, but he let me plug my Ucotech ES-P1s into it and play a few songs while I was taking a break. I have to say the Megatron has a very nice musicality that synergizes perfectly with my ES-P1s and I have a pair of VE Sun Dice buds and a pair of Asura 3.0 buds at home waiting for me to have time to give them a good tryout listening session that I think the Megatron might go well with. They sell combo packs with the Megatron and the Asura 3.0 or the Sun Dice for a reason I would imagine.

Long story short, the musical synergy and wonderful sound had me intrigued from the jump and I ended up placing an order for my very own Megatron just a few minutes ago. I can't wait to add this option to my arsenal.

BTW, the guy who owns the Megatron I listened to said that he also uses it with his 250ohm Beyer DT1990s, his Hifiman Sundaras, and his AKG K702s (62ohms and 91 db sensitivity). The Megatron seemed to have a lot of power on tap and I am not looking to use it for my over ears as I have other devices to drive them, but his claims piqued my curiosity and it never hurts to have another option. Does anyone here have experience using the Megatron for over ears that are reasonably difficult to drive?

Good to know! As I said, it won't be my main setup for over ear listening, but it's always nice to have another option especially when it's a relatively portable option that can take on some of the harder to drive stuff out there. I will indeed give your review a read.

I can't wait for my Megatron to get here so I can give it a thorough workout. The ES9018 is actually one of my favorite DAC chips for mobile applications as the two options I currently have that incorporate it sound very good with some of my favorite transducers.
