That is bad news if the test audience is your average audience weened on nutrient-free, cliche ridden, happy ending, hollywood junk food for the brain. They always make the wrong choices.

I work hard enough that I just want my entertainment (outside of music, literature and art etc.) to be corny. For example -- I am currently in a quarter long seminar on fascism, and after preparing a presentation on the historiography of Hitler, the last thing that I would want to watch would be Schindler's List.

Yes, I think Kate Beckinsale needs to go back to romantic comedies. She's pretty lack luster in action movies. Pretty to look at, but that's about it.

Or she could go back to dramas, like Broken Down Palace. Heheh, that story could easily have a pr0n parody of it.

I hope DarkAngel is right because no amount of CGI or other production values will save a poor script.

Even great actors & directors can't seem to completely pull off tried & true horror themes.
'Nosferatu' (1977 Werner Herzog/Klaus Kinski/Bruno Ganz/Isabelle Adjani.)
'Frankenstein' (1994 Kenneth Branagh/Robert De Niro/Helena Bonham Carter/Aidan Quinn)
'Dracula' (1992 Francis Ford Coppola/Gary Oldman/Winona Ryder/Anthony Hopkins/Richard E. Grant)

And then an unheralded semi-original gem arrives like 'Dark City' (1998) and is greatly entertaining.

I downloaded the 'Van Helsing' trailer and looks a little like 'Blade' of the victorian era. Why would Frankenstein be there?

I'll probably do what I always do which is to lower my expectations, tell my brain to "shut up" and enjoy the fun.

Wow those guys on movie message board are harsh (thus the name anti cool?).........sounds like they think everything is a POS and will never meet their elevated standards, professional negative critics. Didn't realize that "mummy" was such a hated movie among the these elites, which explains why they would find some reason to not like another move by same director......they really hate the "pygmy" mummies from "mummy returns"

My orignal concern with VH was so much going on with all the different monsters how can you make a coherent plot that makes any sense and ties it all together? Could easily turn out to be a series of half baked ideas tossed
together that don't make any sense.......even if they look cool

As far as recent movies of this genre that I really liked:

-Blade (opening vampire rave dance in meat packing plant was classic)
-Blade II (great from start to finish, ready for Blade III

)
-Underworld (great final fight scences vampires vs lycans, cool gothic atmospherics)

Agreed, absolutely. Although I think it's inspiration was the club scene in 'The Hunger'. It's all good.

Good memory..............the BAUHAUS song "bela lugosi's dead" played during that club scence and subsequent blood feast help's to make it classic horror stuff.

I thought HUNGER went downhill from there though and became long and dragged out without much suspense/excitement......more atmosphere than action, don't mind watching Catherine Deneuve for a couple hours, he he.

Getting back to BLADE I and opening rave scence, Snipe's vampire slice n dice action sequence was skillfully shot and choreographed......yeh!

I just saw a re-VAMPED commercial and wow I really do want to see this movie. I'll grab any opportunity to see a fresh interpretation of a werewolf.

BTW I've recently been blasting those beloved nasties in the Doom-like 'Painkiller' pc game.

funny to read this comment on a forum that deals with just as much elitism, just directed at different subjects. movies are their interest, and i wouldn't be suprised if most of them watch films on their bose soundsystems, and commute to work with sony streetstyles..

blade was so bad that i only saw it once, in the theatre, and that made me smart enough to not go see blade 2. i couldn't even finish underworld, it was just that bad. luckily though, i read the abridged movie script and so i got to know the ending.. heh: http://ter.air0day.com/index.php?script=underworld

i think the next action movie i see will be spiderman 2, especially after seeing the latest trailer for van hellsing. so i think i'll just sit this one out.

[edit]: oh and the website is "aint it cool news" not "anti cool"

Well, I wanted to see all of this special to get a better insight to the movie. But it was just so 'all over the place' that I could not stay interested. I get the impression that the movie is like this as well. Too much going on, with no real focus. Kate's cute and all, but as bland as white bread, even with a Romanian accent. Dracula's brides are hot, but not enough for my sawbuck to see the movie.

It just looks really bad. Bummer...

i think the better news out of this whole thing is that the original dracula, frankenstein, and wolfman movies have been released in conjunction with this movie's release. i'd rather watch those than the newer movies.
