Hello, I want to buy a Fostex T50RP but I don't think my onboard audio will have enough power to drive them. I have an old receiver that I can use as an amplifier. Would this be enough to power the Fostex T50rp?

I'll jump in since I am new and have just traveled this road. I have a 1981 Yamaha R700 receiver in my home system as a back up. The headphone section drives my Sony MDR-7506's, AKG-K240's and Beyerdynamic DT770's no problem. Its setup to stream Spotify Premium via CCA>FiiO D3>Yamaha aux input. As a matter of fact it blows away my Schiit Fulla and Aune T1 playing same via laptop USB.

Cheers

Without seeing the circuitry design for a given receiver, it is impossible to tell how it will behave. Some receivers have a dedicated circuit specifically for amping headphones, others bleed the same off the main circuit in several different manners. You can also look at an adapter called a Robinette Box that allows you to use the speaker outs and convert to headphone outs for particularly hard to drive headphones.

this is an all in one type setup for office or bedroom. Probably has a $5 headphone amp IC. This is not a vintage receiver that "might" sound good if totally recapped and restored.

As for lighting up your Takstars, if that is what blows your skirt up as they say, then fine. And it may play the Fostex to a decent volume, but you won't be hearing how well the Fostex can do with this particular setup.
