Pre-purchase Inspection.

If you're serious about a car or insist the seller get one done.

Or at least Carfax it and take a friend with some car knowledge with you.

Carmax is a good start. Classifieds are a good way to get it a little cheaper, just make sure whoever you buy it from keeps up on their paperwork and doesn't have any objections with you test driving and taking it to a mechanic.

i can't believe no one has said this, but: take the car to a mechanic to get checked out; a decent test with checking cylinder pressure (among everything else) should cost you $100; well worth it, and even if everything is fine, it gives you great leverage to negotiate when you can list ever little imperfection the car has
