usb dac addition

This guy takes a Transit, Sonica, or Optoplay (he has not disclosed publicly which one he uses; I'm guessing it is one of those three based on the public information he has provided). He mounts the device inside your DAC, removes the optical transmitter from the Transit and connects it to your DAC's S/PDIF receiver.

The ONLY thing he's removing from the equation with this mod is the need for a digital cable. He's not eliminating the S/PDIF transmission or receiver stages. He claims that this reduces jitter, but it's hard to say how much, if any, the jitter would be reduced in comparison to a good, short coax cable. He wrote a little essay on this (linked from the top of his website), but without measurements it seems to me just conjecture. Wait for actual measurements.

For the money people spend on this mod, most could sell their existing DAC and upgrade to a reclocking DAC that is relatively immune to jitter, such as the Benchmark DAC1 or Bel Canto DAC2.
