So Ubuntu gives you the transferring rate.
Isn't USB 2.0 supposed to transfer at a rate of (minimum) 40mbps? Even USB 1.1 transfers at around 10mbps. WTH?
One single 3.5MB mp3 file takes many minutes to transfer! Anybody know why this is happening?

The speed you get is entirely dependent on the device. 300k is par for the course on cheap flash drives, for example.

USB 2.0 have a data transfer rate up to 480 Mbit/s, so something is clearly wrong.
Does a reboot make a difference? Anyway, I suspect this is Ubuntu specific and that you would have better luck in their forum.

300kbps is a burst speed. the constant speed is much lower.

In reality, USB 2.0 never reaches anywhere near those speeds. 480 Mbit = 60 MB/sec. The most I've seen is about half that over USB 2.0, which is still much faster than the OP's 300 kbit/sec. What we need to know is what device he is using - mp3 player? Flash drive? Hard drive?

Every once in a while on a computer I'm working on, the motherboard's USB drivers have to be wiped and reinstalled. Different motherboard manufacturers call it different things so it's best to check the website's support page.

Also, I've had better luck making hi speed transfers using independently powered USB hubs (ones with a power brick or plug that goes directly into your household current) or USB ports directly connected to the motherboard.

There are good and bad USB cables too.

I know. Which is why I said "up to 480 Mbit/s"...

BTW, I got about 400KB/s transfers on my old Apacer 1GB flash drive before I formatted it again, now it's much higher. I also have a USB 2.0 flash drive that only gets ~150KB/s transfers max because it's just that terrible.

My pc's supposed to have two 2.0 ports, but I've tested the speeds and they seem to be 1.1. For someone who wants to do regular backups of his music, videos, games and saves. This is a problem. Could they be on the inside, or split into the 1.1s?

What Im wondering is... Is there a tweak to speed up the usb ports? Are they limited in some way by the drivers in vista?

No. It's a hardware limitation, not a software one.
