Upgrading from.. *gulp* DT880's

The K701s resolve better than the DT880s and they have a better soundstage. Their highs are emphasized, but if you liked the grados, they should be right up your alley.

But the thing is there isn't really upgrade in his price range (300$).

Cool.. Maybe a 600 ohm DT880? People swear they sound better then the 250 ohm version.

DT990 is more of different headphones rather than upgrade from DT880.

from owners.. Betters the 880 in EVERYWAY.. I will buy a pair in April. Always loved my DT880 for movies & gaming, but thought they were pretty average for music..

On that budget the best you could do would be getting an amp or maybe also a dac.
MY upgrade from the dt880 has become the HE-500 and a decent tube amp. That rig is way more expensive than ur budget but also WAY more satisfying than what the dt880 can deliver when properly amped. But the dt880 definitely scale with better equipment. Still, they won't change much, the characteristica will be the same, but they will most likely become more musical in many ways with a good amp. It should be a good all-round improvement of the phone. More engaging and satisfying, but still the same 'phone.

By the way, I did not find the k701's more detailed or faster than the dt-880 except they might be a bit better with seperating instruments. Just a slight treble emphasis, which makes them seem more detailed. Coming from the etymotic hf5 and also the HE-400/500 I do at least feel like I know what real detail is. Compared to the HE-400 for example, the k701 is slow and the soundstage isn't very defined.

I will say if you want to take a step up you'll hit high end headphones. The T1's are like refined 880's in my opinion although I don't own them so take it with a grain of salt. That's if you like bright headphones too. Beyerdynamics have that peak in the treble. If I were you I would probably save up. If you want an upgrade worth it's salt you could save up or raise more money.

People swear by a lot of things. I've had both and preferred the 250ohm. Professional reviewers like Tyll Hertsen report that they can't hear much if any difference. I'd be more inclined to trust them.

We heard it gurgling in the crib and thought it might need some attention.
