I'm afraid to ask. How much more money will I lose if I want a better DT880? By that, I mean.. I want a more engaging sound. I found out that I love midrange (after listening to Paradigm speakers) and I'm not a basshead afterall (learned after hearing the SRH840's, ick, way too much bass). I loved the sound of the SR-325i's, but the comfort issue was beyond unbearable.

Hell, this might not even be a headphone issue. Perhaps its time I upgrade my amp/dac? You tell me. I've only ever owned my current DAC/AMP and I definitely wouldn't mind getting a better source (I've been looking at the Maverick D1).

Budget is $300, I prefer to buy used because I'm a poor starving student

Hello fellow starving uni student.

I had the SRH840 and didn't find it too bassy but you can ko the D2000s. I really enjoy the bass of the K701 so I'm not a bass head by any means. Some full sized ATs are said to have nice midrange. It's a pitty you don't get along with Grados

I want some RS1s or MS Pros.

Perhaps I'm finding it too bassy because I'm comparing it to the Beyer DT880's. I think the DT880's have a perfect amount of bass but the SRH840s have a certain bass that just feels significantly bloated. Perhaps I should try this burn in thing more? They've had about 20 hours of (burn-in) use so far.

you'll love the DT990's

they're the more bad ass version of the 880's. When i made the switch, i never looked back and i am contemplating on selling my 880's that rarely get any time on my head.

here's how i would compare the 2;

880's=neutral, relaxing, adequate bass(but a bit too bass light for me), analytical, terrific imagining and clarity over-all, but just not my cup of tea.

990's = musical, engaging,very deep 5.1 type(kinda

) sound spectrum feeling, incredibly eargasmic bass presentation when the song calls for it, feels like 50% akg 701, 50% Ultrasone Pro 900, very happy smile on my face.

get the right equipment and 990's will reward you well

Only true upgrade from DT880 is T1, which is whooping a grand.

DT990 is more of different headphones rather than upgrade from DT880.

There are others.

I listen to... a wide variety, my favourite artist is Onoken; if someone can help me define this genre I'd really appreciate it, haha. I would personally label it melodic trance?

For example:

Onoken - Vijore
YouTube - Onoken - vijore

I think I indeed misunderstood OP's intention.

But the thing is there isn't really upgrade in his price range (300$).

I think the HD600 is a good option. I'd also potentially keep the Sony SA5000 on your list - it's kind of a divisive headphone, but I think based on what you've said so far I think you might really like it. It's also absurdly comfortable.

The reason the HD600 wasn't an option for me before was because I didnt like the HD555 much. Is there a big jump between the two?

Also, I can up the price range to $500 if I sell my SRH840's

definitely upgrade your dac & amp

you can spend all you want upgrading your headphones, but if your source/amp isn't up to par, you wont be satisfied

I think the HD600 is possibly a downgrade.

Not really, but what I mean is if you like beyers and you didn't like the 555, you probably won't think HD600s are much of an "upgrade."

If you like mids, you might want to consider the 600 ohm version of the DT880. Those are supposed to have better mids than the 250 ohm.
