Hey OP. Read that thread earlier, and it got rather unruly near the end. Dunno why it's locked since I didn't get a chance to post in it. Can you remember what the setup was for the beats by dre when you first listened to them? Were they connected to something hidden away with a different cable present allowing you to connect your mp3 mplayer?
I don't know how they'd do it but it could be the first time you listened to the beats the sound was being put through a sound enhancer. If you get a chance try and find someone or something that has the beats by dre sound enhancer like the HTC phones now have. That's as close as you can get to a subwoofer. If you remember the sony walkman phones of 6-8 years ago, they had an equaliser setting on there called "mega bass". This basically did the same thing. I haven't had a chance to try them with full sized headphones, but with in ears they increase the physical feedback DRAMATICALLY.
