Unique Melody Flagships--Mason & Mentor Announcement and Impression Thread

What’s funny is I don’t consider the Indigo colorful or exciting. And if the mentor has even softer highs it wouldn’t be for me. I think for metal in general u need more of a bite in the treble for the music to be engaging or it just winds feeling congested and flat. Of course maybe I’m just being crazy bc now that I’m into the hobby I can’t get out 😂
Well what you’re describing isn’t as much FR-related as it is dynamics-related.

Mentor does have boosted mid treble which makes it very sharp on “bite” and transients.

I was listening to some Mastodon and Tool earlier with Mentor and it was fantastic - best I’ve heard.

But no, it’s probably not the best iem for metal :)

So the MM has the crispness up top for cymbals and whatnot? How does the sound differ in these metal tracks from the indigo (since it looks like you have that IEM also)?

Listening to some Rage with the MM right now and it is pretty incredible. This is one that makes me want to sell alot of other stuff as it fills many shoes.

It’s more the soundstage and little nuances that you hear with the MM that makes me want to search out all music to listen to. I use a touch of eq up top and it’s simply amazing..it’s immersive. All the reviews have been with ambient and electronic music which I’m sure sounds incredible. I listen to metal and prog and they’re amazing. I’ll have search out some electronic and ambient just to hear it lol.

Another thing that amazed me is how light the MM is. I took them out and was like What? Is anything in the iem at all? LOL Especially because I had the Ragnar, which is heavy, cold and huge. It really is amazing the technology that they are able to put in these things to sound the way they do. My wife who has absolutely no interest in my IEM's or my music looked at them and went "those are cool looking". She hates my music so, I gave her my Sony DAP and I put on Adele's new album in high res and she put them in. Her reaction was very scientific, she went "sounds clear and very good". If I told her the price she would punch me in the face.

I posted a playlist with an assortment of stuff like that a couple pages ago:
https://www.head-fi.org/threads/uni...nt-and-impression-thread.961752/post-17359777

Just so I'm not making you dig, here are the links again:

Listen to the playlist Music That MEST With Me by SpeleoFool on Qobuz https://open.qobuz.com/playlist/6463742
Tidal Version: https://tidal.com/playlist/8f4b4edb-ae12-48a6-95a3-73c09de7a96d

These are varied tracks that I liked with MEST; they translated extremely well with MM, too. There are a lot of electronic tracks.

I also just finished another playlist that's more specifically "rattle your brain" stuff with a heavy emphasis on electronic (like, almost exclusively electronic).

Listen to the playlist Brain Tarter Removal Kit Pt 2: Deep Cleaning by SpeleoFool on Qobuz https://open.qobuz.com/playlist/13243281
Tidal version: https://tidal.com/playlist/7547086d-0272-4935-bd5b-28d4e0237d50

All of my playlists are curated for flow, so I can start at the beginning and just hit play & enjoy the ride. I've been through this newer one a few times already with MM; really liking how it turned out.

I don’t do streaming but I’m not against buying off of qobuz. I’ll check a few out and maybe buy just for the experience.

For now, with the N8ii it is FANTASTIC.
I have replace the stock cable with my Silver Palladium and the result is astonishing!
Zero sibilance even with Clues from Patricia Barber.
Spend 3 hours with it yesterday night till 3AM - could not find ANY complaint, the tonality is perfect and with N8, that has a big rounded stage, it is MAGIC.
N7 will arrive in 5 days....

I have also recently got a Mentor, and agree its a superb IEM. One thing, with the stock cable do you find it comes out too easily from its 2-pin connector? Twice now an IEM has dropped off the cable as I got pick it up. I thought about seeing if I could slightly bend in one of the pins to help it clamp more, but not overly keen on doing that and so wondered if this is normal for the Deep of Universe stock cable.

Got mine a week ago and it does the same. It should be a problem with the connectors and not the socket right?

I haven’t had that issue luckily. @ciscokid96 how are you liking them so far? I know I kinda rec’d them to you.

They are great. The technicalities and presentation is insane. They also trade blows with the Elysian X when it comes to electronic music. I just started getting into house music because the BCD makes the bass from that genre have a physical sensation that is addicting.

It is absolutely a great all rounder and I could even sell all my other IEMs and be content.

It is unfortunate that the reason why I bought it was for rock and metal music, but for me I still feel an itch for something better for that genre, so the search for my specialized rock IEM still continues. I guess my expectations are too high for rock as my favorite genre. It still passes the mark for enjoyment, but I want something that wows me as a specialist for the genre as Traillii did with folk music, or Elysian X with electronic music. I even enjoy Electronic music more than rock music on the Mentor.

These are still super great and will be my main driver when I don't want to be switching IEMs a lot, or want to listen to a Playlist of a variety of genres. Even watching movies with the Mentor is a great experience. They remind me of when I bought the OG Mest as my first IEM over $1k. They absolutely wow me with that imaging.

I look forward to trying new TOTL IEMs and find which one wows me in the metal/rock department.
