I have always felt the modern equalization that comes with mastering destroys the sound of the headphones.  Everything is layered in a certain way which gives the music depth but then it is mastered which is not always bad.  There is a lot of good mastering just not in the mainstream.  The mainstream mastering takes audio equalizes it until it is like a flood of sound coming at you at once.  All audio should be mastered to make it crisper and clearer but it should provide a great sense of depth.  So ask yourself the next time you see an old album said to be remastered.  The question is what do they mean by remastered..  So don't assume that it will be improved.  A lot of times they are trying to normalize it so when you listen to it on your mp3 player you never have to adjust the volume level.  Some albums give their beauty to their lack of normalization.  When they normalize albums to me they become boring.
