Technical, I don't think so. It's just a sidestep. The PRO900 is one of the bassiest headphones I ever heard and owned. Without modding oder equalizer not really suitable for music, unless you are a basshead. The only UPgrade you can make within the Ultrasone family is a Edition9 or a Edition8.

I am sure ED 9 and ED 8 are great headphones but Pro 900 Kees Modded is a superb upgrade to the 750. I have never heard the 2500. It should be as safe bet you can go if you are happy with the 2500. Pro 900 surely have a lot of bass in stock. More then my preferences but you can fine tune it by KeeS modding them. Virtually for free and very easy.
Worth every penny for me.

I second oqvist opinion, if you tame the bass the pro900's are superb cans, they also have the s-logic plus technology which is only shared by the ed8's, I really enjoyed them...

X2.
Unmodded, the Pro900 are the worst headphones I ever listened to.
Metallic and sibilant highs, recessed mids and a crazy overbearing bass.

i love the ultrasone sound but i cant afford the edition 9 adn from what i red in the forums hear if i have the 2500\750 proline i shouldn't buy the 900,
i prefer open cans to close ones and in ear are good to and i don't have an amp right now and it's for outside hearing

Your running your proline-2500 unamped? ~ the obvious suggestion would be to get an amp?

Yes it makes a huge HUGE difference, plugged directly into my Zune/soundcard they are somewhat lifeless, much less impact, not much fun.

Whats an amp3?

I agree get a nice not to expensive headphone amp. Then save up for the Pro 900 if you want a nice upgrade for the future. It´s not the same running these unamped that´s for sure.

Many preferr them over the ED 9. KeeS modded of course. To take this into context the Pro 900 does nothing worse than the 2500 unless having to much bass. It´s just some 10$ and easilly removable without any tools needed to fix that so it´s not really much of a gamble.

Assuming the Pro 2500s are anything like the Pro 900s, you definitely need an amp to get the most out of them. That said, the amp3 does include an amp, so you might be alright. Probably worth checking out the amp3 thread to see if anyone has done some comparisons of the amp3 amp with other amps.
