Can the experts throw down a real quick response on the general sound these brands have with headphones? NON-IEM.

Grado

Sennheiser

Sony

AT

and any other particular one you may want to include. "Still" looking for a good pair of portable/home headphones. Single cable with overall great sound from the lows to the highs. What is the absolute best sounding headphone:

Single sided cable
Comfortable
Portable (can handle some bumps and knocks)

The AT sound is generally mid-centric but not always. Many of their phones are a bit bass light but again not all.

For portable use the ATH M50 are not bad, and if you can bear to risk them getting banged the ESW9 (carefull for fakes) sound very nice or go all out and get the ESW10 and be really blown away (along with your wallet being cleaned out).

For cheaper phones you can also look at the AKG or JBL portables, they have semi open and closed models that are not bad. I found them to be very bass heavy though with rolled off highs and only an average midrange. Some good prices can be found for these though.

For an all rounder with what looks to be pretty solid construction you can also look at the Shure 440 closed portable. In my brief listen to one they seemed pretty solid if not spectacular across the sound spectrum.

X2.

The sennheiser sound can actually vary alot between the models. The highest end seem to be darker and warmer than the latter below. The 650 is darker than the 600 and the IE8 is warmer and more bassier than the IE7 etc. But they all have a warm and relaxing, laid back signature, that you wont understand until you've heard something more aggressive.

Grado can be put as one word, rock. It's about the opposite of sennheisers, but still not analytical.
