Tube amp WITHOUT visible tubes?

Aug 10, 2005 at 11:25 PM Post #17 of 37
I've got a millet hybrid that I feel matches up w/ my dt880s very nicely, and it has no visible tubes. It was well under $950 and provides plenty of power to the cans and the sylvania 12ae6a's offer a very nice compliment of ss and extension imo. Mine was made by zemo.

Well after rereading the review from JaZZ and seeing how it was Kevin that shot the amp down, what else is new, the Rudi RP5.1 is back to the front runner.

Its funny everytime I see Millet Hybrid I think of HeadRoom, take it there is a DIY too? What builders make them, where can I get more info, reviews and such? Thanks.

Amen. You can get a completely maxed to the high heavens Millet for waaaay under your budget. The hard part is just finding someone to build one for you

edit: Solude, check out the Millet Construction thread in the DIY section. I'm sure you'll find everything you need to know in there. As far as impressions, they are scattered all over the place, especially the recent Head-Fi meets that have taken place. I'm expecting a maxed out version late this week or early next week, and you better believe that I'll post some impressions!

Thanks Thaddy. I took a headphone break and looks like I missed a lot. Millet, Rudi, Dynahi, M3... been a busy time since I left.

Okay, I don't get it. Your wife doesn't want to see tubes ... but she doesn't mind the $950 towards a headphone amplifier!?

Good luck

I would seriously try to find a used AudioValve RKV. It is truly a remarkable amp. Although, I'm a fan of the Senn 600's ... so we may have different tastes. I'm merely echoing past replies of others, but you might also try the Melos SHA-1 or the X-CAN v3. I haven't heard the X-CAN v3 myself, but I did like the X-CAN v2 -- the Melos is a great amp as well.

Oh, not to mention the ASL MG-Head ... I'm not so sure you can beat it for the price ... of course I haven't heard the other newer designs that are offered for about the same price. It is usually shown without the cage on but I suppose you could always cage them ... and if you looked closely between the metal, you would notice three tubes crying in a soft glow. It comes with the cage, btw.

In the price range you are considering, the one (enclosed) tube amp I could recommend, without question, would be the Eddie Current DM-1. Wonderful amp, superb sound, built by someone who truly cares.
Actually, for $900.00, I would recommend over anything made, tubed, or not. Enclosed or not.

Since we have to share an office soon... no tubes

You could easily change her mind if you wanted to be creative. How about cooking her dinner and eating it over the soft warm glow of tubes? Show her the raging alcoholic...er, I mean the romantic side of you that has been supressed for so long. Worth a shot, no?

You can even take a nice hot bubble bath with her after the dinner...the tubes should provide the perfect level of ambient light. Just don't let the amp fall into the tub!

Last thing you want to hear from a female is "Hey, your tube is showing"

You mean you didn't wait for my insightful review that I spent an hour to write!?

Good buy, nonethless. I think the price has dropped. Need to double check later. I hope it will match well with your Beyer headphones.

I would suggest getting a matched pair of Amperex orange globe 6DJ8s. Make sure it's not the "A" frame ones. I'll try to send you some pictures.

Solude,

Discregard most of what I said. I thought the pricing was signifcantly different than what I remembered, so I did some search. I guess the RP5cav is no longer in production. I probably have one of the last few units produced.

Rudistor RP5cav Rudi had upgraded some of the parts in my unit and changed the designation to RP5.1cav.

But I think the overall sound signature should be similar.
