Some jazz recommendations off the top of my head. I've left out some classics that get named in every jazz related discussion. Albums that I highly recommend checking out are in italic.

Alice Coltrane - Ptah, the El Daoud
Art Blakey - Free for All; Moanin'
Bill Evans Trio - Waltz for Debby
Charles Mingus - Blue & Roots; Mingus Ah Um
Chick Corea - Return to Forever
Dexter Gordon - Go
Grant Green - Green Street
Hank Mobley - Soul Station
Herbie Hancock - Empyrean Isles; Maiden Voyage
Horace Silver - The Cape Verdean Blues
Jackie McLean - Destination Out!
Joe Henderson - Page One
John Coltrane - Crescent
Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert
Mahavishnu Orchestra - The Inner Mounting Flame
Miles Davis - Cookin'; 'Round About Midnight
Oliver NelsonThe Blues and the Abstract Truth
Thelonious Monk - Monk's Music
Tina Brooks - True Blue
Wayne Shorter - Juju; Speak No Evil

Very good listing here. I could've made it myself, except for the Page One which I have never listened to!! Must check it out.

On Classic Rock, please check out The Who "Who's Next" for a good start with them.

Thanks for the additional artist and album recommendations, including the modern jazz list. Even though I am interested in the classics those albums were fantastic.

More recommendations are always welcome, have a solid foundation so far. :)

Listening right now to a lovely 1957 (Chess GRP 18032) recording... Ahmad Jamal - Ahmad's Blues. Live... great recording despite it's age... you can almost smell the room...
