AKG 501 and Grado SR60? I'm sure it will be fine for the Grado's, but I have read about the AKG's being very power hungry. This will be used with the USB cord straight from my computer.

I used the Total BitHead for a while with the K501 at work...it's not the optimum pairing, but it's not awful by any means.

Was it the 2006 Bithead?

Hmmm... I just went to the HeadRoom site and did not see any specifications or measurements for the Total BitHead.

From my experience, you are going to want close to 1W of power for the AKG K-501. They really need it. All those who believe the K-501 to have inadequate bass are usually have them underamped. From what I've seen, they're almost as tough to drive as the K-1000. Not quite, but in the same ballpark.

The SR-60s, however, will do fine. The HF-1 sounds great right out of an iPod, so I'd expect about the same from any Grado.

Give me a few more days and I may be in a better position to help - as my K601's are coming in on Thursday (I hope - darn holiday). I can at least try them with my 2006 Total Bithead and that should give you a better idea if they'll drive the K501's comfortably.

I certainly hope so, as I really don't want to have to buy another headphone amp right now.

Anyone else?

I can't say much for the 501 as I haven't tried them with it, but my 2006 Total Bithead drove HD650s pretty well. There's a gain switch in there now.

Also, you can always call up Headroom and ask them what they think. I really don't think they'd mislead you about what it can and cannot drive... they've probably even tried the 501 on it or the Airhead.

OK, my K601's are here and guess what ----- the Headroom Total Bithead v.2006 set in high-gain mode handles them just fine, thank you very much. They'd probably sound even better run through a higher-end headphone amp, but as it is, I don't feel I'm missing a thing. Glorious.

Well, that about settles it. I am close to winning a pair for under $100 shipped, and with my next check I will get the 2006 BitHead and a pair of SR225's. After that, I am done for a good while I think!
