Tom Petty rescues us from Dynamic Compression.

Wow, quite a statement. I would love to buy both if I had the money to burn. Oh well, I'm sure it'll turn up through other sources eventually.

Good idea but that would mean changing the CD specification and therefore every CD player on the planet.

There is of course no real reason why all CDs shouldn't be mastered properly in the first place. The reason why compression is so overused on many CDs is because the band or record company has instructed the mastering engineer to make it louder than another bands recording. After 20 years of this loudness competition so much compression is being used it's become ridiculous and ruins the experience for many. Engineers have been complaining about this problem for well over a decade.

The postman just dropped off my Amazon.com delivery this minute. You gotta hand it to Amazon, their service seems pretty good.

Haven't listened to it yet (obviously) but I have got iTunes importing the CD as I type this.

I'm unfortunately on my way out the door, so I'll have to give the CD it's first listen in my car and check out the Double LP later this evening when I'm back home.

Don't forget to normalize it to 100%. I read somewhere the CD is really quiet.

This is a wonderful ideal. I would really really appreciate it if every LP I purchased came with a CD that was made from the LP master. It means I have an immediate digital backup and I can easily rip it to whatever DAP I want to and archive it again for safe keeping.

As they said LP sales are raising so maybe in a near future we'll get more of those CD made from the LP master. Sadly I have yet to hear a LP(Wish I was born in the LP/tubes era, those times seem so sweet)

Hopefully I'll be able to enjoy non-compressed music soon.

it compresses the music if you jack it up to 100% (i think) i know it makes weird jumps in the dynamic range

"It is not an experience for everyone."

Wha? What the hell does that mean? That nobody would like music that sounds like...music? That guy is ill.

Ah well, thanks Mr. Petty and gang. Let's get the dynamic compression back.

I think what he meant is that people used to compression would find the true soud disturbing compared to the compressed sound.

I got the LP and uncompressed CD in the mail today. First time I have ordered anything from Amazon, and was very pleasantly surprised by their very fast service! It came in a big well-packed box. Very nice!

I have now both the normal CD, and this vinyl master CD, and there is to my ears a huge difference between those two albums. First, the uncompressed is obviously lower in volume. There is a very noticable more natural and relaxing sound to it. The normal CD has more of a "midrange glare", and everything sounds more harsh, smeared together, and more "digital". But, both albums sound very good to me, but the vinyl master CD is just plain better! It has more dynamics, depth, naturalness and analog sound to it. The "loudness button" is off, and I like it a lot!
