Back when I was big in to Tolkien, and after having read the Hobbit, LotR, and the Silmarillion, I read Unfinished Tales and enjoyed that a lot. I would recommend that.

Unfinished tales is actually part of 12 (yes, twelve) volumes that are the 'History of Middle Earth'. Tolkien passed away before finishing all volumes, so his son Christopher Tolkien finished collating the materials for the last volume or two...

I second Omega. Pick up A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. There are 3 more that follow. Once you start you won't stop until they are all read and then you can wait for the 5th book like the rest of us.
