Tidal Lossless Streaming

Damn this site sucks sometimes. Does anybody else get this problem: about 20% of the time if I quote somebody in my reply, you see what you typed below the quote, hit submit and your text is missing, just the quoted information is there? Just happened now for like the 30th time I swear, and this is on two different computers!

Anyway, I was asking about the Google relationship with BandCamp which I didn't know about and what the quality of the stream is from Google. Thanks brother.

Ah, there's no DIRECT relationship, what's just nice is being able to take the stuff I buy on BC and put it straight into Google so it's all together. No app switching, everything at 320kbps.

Cool, I really like Tidal, but I may add Google to compare with and see. Thanks brother.

It's likely going to come down to whether or not you're okay with the bitrate drop (ignoring all discussions about audible differences for now). If listening at 320 doesn't bug you, Google is without question the better service. If you want the HiFi, Tidal's the only game in town.

I don't give a rats ass about lossless, 320 is plenty of fidelity for streaming in my book. I use these services to discover new music, and to flesh out my collection. Thanks for the input.

Then Google is gonna win. Its discovery engine is leaps and bounds better than Tidal's. It's not quite on Spotify's level (Spotify's "Discover" page is stellar), but it's a lot better with similar artists and suggestions than Tidal, plus all the playlists and radio stations, not to mention that added bonus of being able to upload your own when Google itself is missing stuff.

I do wish Tidal had Google's feature set, or Google would let you stream FLAC haha.

A brand new roon user here (like I've been using it for 30 mins now)
My overall Signal Chain quality is "High Quality"

When I check my signal chain it looks like this:

Am I supposed to see "Purple" overall, if yes what am I missing ?
Thanks for your help in advance.

My chain is iMac > Roon / Tidal > Yggy

If you are streaming a Hi-Fi quality from Tidal, Signal Chain value to your device should show "Lossless". The stream from your Source is Hi-Fi quality as shown by the white signal quality indicator, however that signal is being modified to a lower quality by the OS Mixer on your system. To avoid this, you should go into Roon Settings and "Enable" your Yggy as an output device for a desired zone. This will allow you to select the Yggy (rather than using the default "System Output") as your desired output device bypassing the OS Mixer on your system. I'm running Windows which is why the Output stage is showing WASAPI Exclusive Mode, but note the signal quality indicator is white as it is with the Source.

I suspect configuring zone device Settings for a MAC will be similar.  If you have additional questions send me a PM, or perhaps we can continue the discussion over on the Roon thread.

Thanks for your response, I did figure it out a few minutes after I posted that message. Was busy enjoying my music, I was planning on reply to my own question eventually :)
Enabling Yggy AND giving Roon full control of the DAC i.e. checking "Use Exclusive Mode" did the trick.

Glowing purple quality across the entire chain now :)

Just got the email about the Tidal shop. Is it new or very old news and I just missed it? Nice to be able to download songs and move them onto different devices (says the guy who just bought a new DAP that runs Tidal for streaming / downloading onto that device!)

Quote:
The Tidal shop is rather new. Only time will tell if it will do well in the marketplace, but its one of the larger FLAC libraries out there.

In advance of CES in early January, here's an interesting article on TIDAL's plans for 2016:

Or well trained ears.

This speaks of the difference between an audiophile and a music lover. Not that the two are mutually exclusive.
Just think that anyone expecting a whole new level of music enjoyment from Hi Res is going to be disappointed.
