People I live with just bought one of those crappy stands that have maybe four tiny speakers and the ipod "plugs" into the middle of it. The sound is terrible. But being a snob myself, I wonder if I over react to it. Is there a better way to listen to an ipod open air?

Yes.

I connect mine to a Vintage Amp and a pair of JBL bookshelf speakers - sounds very nice and was cheap to boot.

M-Audio powered near field monitors or something would be really nice.

I've plugged mine into a SI Super T amp that drives Magnavox SR-3 clones. Sounds great.

I'm thinking I may go for a Shanling Music Center and some small high efficiency single driver speakers.

The Monitor iDeck that I think went for around $150 sounds real good for the money.

Of course there are countless ways.
