I am considering getting a CD player instead of an external DAC. I am trying to upgrade from a 1212M soundcard. Any recommendations? Something with tubes would be preferable.

Don't think there are many CD players with tubes out there.
The Cary Audio CD 303/300 is an excellent player. But it might be out of your price range?

Yes, maybe a Jolida might suit me better? Price range is around $500. Sorry forgot to mention that.

Its $900 price tag is still a bit above your price range. But you might be able to pick up a used one.

Excellent review. I'm drooling already. This is exactly what I need...

I LOVE my Jolida...
Go to Underwood HiFi.com or call direct @ 770-667-5633...
They have a great price on the base modle(which I have) or you can opt for mods...

A few more tube based players I can think of are the Shanlings and the Eastern Electric Minimax, which has earned nothing but superb reviews from both the press and the buying public that I've seen.

Actually, there are many tubed CD players out there.

Audio Aero has the Prima, Capitole, and Prestige. Depending on your price range. To add a few more to the list.

I prefer my A8T to the rega planet. More detailed, wider soundstage and instrument separation (from the transistor output). If you want a smoother sound, the tube output will deliver. Here it cost around $400 shipped from China, and at that price point it trounces the competition.

In this review - http://www.dagogo.com/Original-RedWine-Bastanis.html - the author finds it comparable to the MiniMax.

I'm curious why Mr. Gong sells his players for so much more than his competitors? I did a search on the CD-2008 and there're several retailers selling the newer "F/Pro" version for less than $600 compared to his $900. Am I missing something here? Are the internals of the newer models of lesser value?

Edit: Ahh, I see now. The cheaper versions are the 220-240V versions. I take it the ones at AAA Audio are the 120V versions?
