The Stax Thread III

All this talk about tube amps for electrostatic headphones and the KGGG didn't get mentioned once. Did it just slip everyone's minds or is it just a super rare amp in the wild?
Pretty rare.
I’ve found it a confusing amp since it has the same limitations of the BHSE (lacking a clean non-mosfet design) but without perhaps the sonic signature that would make the BHSE appropriate for certain synergy.

This is my first post in a while since my review of the Hifiman Sundara, since which I have acquired my own pair of HD6XXs (the pair used to compare in that review where my Father’s) and Stax SR-202s and SRM-525 II Energiser. I have wanted a pair of Stax ever since I was first exposed to Audiophile headphones, and i’m not regretting the investment, the SRS-2050 system sounds incredible, outperforming my elegias, which were previously my nicest headphones, in almost every aspwct, including Soundstage, Accuracy, Neutrality and Realism. I am glad to now be a Stax owner, and i’m sure ill
be back with queries for this thread. I also may review this setup at some point, following positive feedback on my review of the Sundara.

Interesting, I was debating between paying to get my 007t CCS and tube modded versus jumping to one of those; sounds like in your opinion its not better than a BHSE?

No. I’m saying the design seems strange. The idea behind the carbon is to have an elegant sic fet design, why add tubes?

Isnt the GG essentially Carbon with El34 output?

Hm, i always wonder, why people think, that the Mjolnir Carbon is bright. For me personally it is quite dark. Also find it funny, that people compare power of amps by looking how far the Volume knob is turned to the right. I don't think, that it makes sense to compare power of amps like that.
But his review is very entertaining :)
On average ppl are clueless and lack technical understanding quite often, but they like to talk about it being proud of having something $$$$, so bear with them...

I sort of think the same. I had the L700 + 353X in the box for the past years because I don't have the need for open-back but recently I changed earpads and headpad to sell them and compared with the DCA Stealth and apart from the sub-bass in some tracks I didn't think the Stealth outperformed the Stax, and considering that the Stealth needs to be paired with the HPA4 to reach the same level, that makes Stax a very good value. I still think the Stealth is an excellent headphone (but requires an amp able to deliver enough current) and it's closed-back, which is the important part for me, but when thinking about value...

those look great. I hope they sound as good as they look. I guess I need to start watching those auctions to grab a pair as well. Do you mind sharing how much they cost you?

Great clamp force like the 70xxx pair I picked up about a month or so back. They sound excellent! The owner used once or twice and then it had been kept away in the box all these years. They cost (incl the Buyee services fees, which is really small) about US$1.7K. :)

Congratulations! They look brand new!

Where would you rank the 007 as a whole compared to your endless stable of headphones :L3000:

@ruhian and I were having a discussion on the 007. I think the 007, technicalities aside, has one of the most engaging tonality around. :) Which is why I do enjoy them as much as they do. Even if, admittedly, I do have a library of Stax earspeakers. :)

Sorry about your wallet :) In the mid 2000s I was going to get some Stax as a college graduation present. I don't recall which model but total everything was like $1,500. I decided it was too expensive. Coming up on 20 years on Headfi you can see by my sig I decided to go "all in" on estats since I can always sell them later.

I've had people DM me out of the blue asking me to sell them my gear actually lol
