Ok, so for those that don’t know me from the various tubes/tube amp threads, I have terrible impulse control. As can be exhibited in this purchase while waiting for my KGGG to arrive…

Just getting used to them. I originally thought they were a bit “honky” in the midrange, but that went away after a short while. They don’t do deep bass as well as the CRBN, but i think that’s as much the amp as the headphones problem. I’LLC know more next week when my KGGG arrives.

This is more related to the 007a and other mk2 models having the open port. The blu-tact mod will correct this and make it structurally similar to the mk1.

At CanJamNYC I heard the two
SR-007 mk1 that were at the Eksonics Suite and then listened to the CRBN on the T2 build and the Aeras. I enjoyed the Stax more. Of course a show is a hard place to listen but in the suite was of course better.

New family member , sr-lambda signature 80s.
After a week of comparison :

Sr-Lambda signature - bit bright, has the normal lambda voice issues but lot of dynamics. Kind of gritty sounding but some might call that detailed (it feels like the image contrast is high). Bass is not terrible and overall better than the modern Stax line. Seems less sensitive to amps. Sounded pretty similar on the srm-313 that was Mjolnir modified, kgssHV and Novem.

LNS - many clicks more chill to the LS. Less high end and voices don’t have the nasal effect. Really smooth and at first it seems like it has less detail but as your ear adjusts you see it’s pretty close. Personal favorite out of all the lambda I’ve tried so far. Scales more with more power. Not a good fit for tubes.

Not in photo, L300 - had these for a few days. Weird how the cups are flipped (big side faces back instead of front). Smaller soundstage than the other lambda, but pretty good dynamics. Too harsh for my taste and a bit bass light. Very good value overall and scales very nicely with more power but sounded best with the Novem (similar to x9000). Highly recommend.

Have you had the opportunity to listen to either the Lambda L700 or L700 mk2?
I am liking them more than any other Lambda I have owned or heard (a lot over the years). The L700 gets most of its playing on an Eksonic Aeras and a SRM-717 as a change of pace occasionally.

Good luck with the search and enjoy.

Nice Looking Photo 👍🏻

Add in a L300LE 80th Anniversary - a L700 in disguise😉

The KGGG has landed!

Just got it set up and am currently enjoying all the EL34 goodness with my 007’s. I am, however, disappointed in the CRBN’s. They don’t seem to reach as deep and still have issues with the occasional fart and a weird new thing - they jump in volume if I turn my head too fast. I’m still within my 30 day return window - they may be going back.

Anyway, pics!

I knew someone who performed in that album as part of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh. I was listening to that same album today on my L700mk2 driven by a CCS-modded SRM-006tS. It reinforced my hunch that the modern Advanced Lambda line doesn't work that well with the cleaner, more linear sound of the CCS-modded Stax amp. The entrance of the brass section at 4:48 of the Finale in that album is one of my benchmarks for how brass instruments are rendered. The L700mk2 does well in this part as the midrange bump brings an energetic stridency to the trumpets, but on the 006tS there is a hint of honkiness to those trumpets too, that isn't as noticeable when I run the L700 on the SRM-D10. By every conventional metric, the CCS mod makes the 006tS a better amp than the D10, and I think that it makes both bass and treble better on the L700, but it somehow also exacerbates the issues with the midrange tuning. I had to start reaching for the EQ to tone down the midrange peak, which I generally don't need to do when listening through the D10.

I might try tube rolling - I have a pair of NOS RCA Clear Top 6CG7s from an attempt to repair a previous 006t amp - and see if the change in tubes helps things. I'm also curious to try out the L700 on a stock Stax tube amp to see if the midrange problems aren't as severe on a lower-powered or "dirtier" amp. Synergy matters a lot with estats.

That’s a mighty fine amp you got there.

You definitely want to EQ the L700, it's got about a 5db bump at 1.2khz followed by an upper mid that can be recessed to varying degrees, and the treble can also be quite edgy with some excess energy at 5-6khz and a few other places besides. The bass can also be quite seal dependent and vary in extension and quality. While you can't really EQ away the bass problems very well - if you have them in the first place - the mids and highs respond nicely and you can minimize the honk and treble edge with just a few adjustments, and get it sounding much more natural.
