Because I also use analog sources, and don't want to bring a PC back into my music listening experience. I've had all the major software players - Amarra, Audirvana, jRiver, etc - and hated them with a passion.
That's a lot of money just to EQ 20hz &120hz.

I don't have any experience with analogue EQ aside from xBass with iFi stuff. I'm surprised how iFi don't have their own product as their xBass is very popular.

Has anyone tried a Schiit Loki Max? I need the EQ more for a frustrating set of speakers I have, than headphones - but I figure if it's going to degrade sound quality, it would reveal itself on a high resolution e-state setup.

I sold the RME before I thought to try its EQ - I didn't like its sound when "flat", comared to my other DACs.
A less expensive way could be to try the Lokius and if you like it's effect and if so, go for the Max. All of that said, I've been curious about the Max as well but haven't taken the test drive to see if I like it.

What were the issue's you were experiencing using software EQ? Maybe I can help you out.
I'm using equalizer APO for everything and it can do amazing things if you know how to use it properly.

I tried many hardware EQ's I always end up with equalizer APO (software EQ) in the end, it's worth the hassle.
Major software players like Amarra, Jriver etc always gave me worse results compared to equalizer apo btw.

a friend of mine has two loki and says it's not very invasive. Take it with a pinch of salt though

MusicBee is king. Everything "just works" out of the box.

I haven't tried those. I don't have much to complain about with Media Monkey but i mostly use it for its library curation tools rather than as a player.

I do still extensively use my Squeezebox devices, and despite the fact that Logitech abandoned the product line 10 years ago, the ecosystem is still alive and well. They just have to call the server Lyrion Music Server now.

I'm actually embarking on a project to assemble a new player using the PiCorePlayer OS on an old raspberry pi 3 with a touchscreen and an outboard DAC (adding spdif output to the Pi). I've been running my own server for at least 15 years, it's not hard to stand up, and picoreplayer can host a server on the raspberry pi as well. Among the original devices, the ones that have digital output either lack a physical user interface or are prohibitively expensive. The Squeezebox Touch was a very promising product that reportedly has a badly designed internal power regulation circuit that eventually fries the whole thing.

I'm not bringing a PC / server / streamer / software into this. I don't enjoy it. It's not a question of needing help, or desiring better software. Was looking for feedback specifically about the Loki's.

Good thing this is summit-fi, where we (relatively) sneeze at $1500 :)

Yeah that's true lol. I must have spent a few grand just on power cables and interconnects! :deadhorse:

You guys talking about Schiit Loki reminder me I have one on the shelf, but it's not the Loki you are talking about.
It is the Schiit Loki DSD. LOL, funny that they recycled the name to a new branch of products.
Probably trying to forget that they made the Loki DSD... :)
