The Stax SR-L500 and SR-L700 Impressions Thread

Makes me wish you had bought an L700.  That's the model I'm saving my pennies for. Had you thought about trying the L700?

I actually heard them back to back on the same setups and did not find the difference between the two significant.
There is a post from someone that echoes a similar sentiment, with amplifiers having a more substantial effect on the sound than the L500 vs L700 differences.

finally got to audition the sr-l700 today and compare it to the sr-009 from the same rig. the sr-l700 had a more forward presentation as i heard it, with upper mids and treble accentuated more than the sr-009. both exhibited the clarity and resolution for which estats are renowned. i also found the hd800s to be a worthy alternative option.

Thanks! What was the rig and e-stat amp? What was the rig and amp for HD800s? And just to clarify this - you mean that HD800s is a worthy alternative option to SR-L700 ... or to 009 ... or to both?

the amp was the srm-007t. i'm not sure which dac was used. the cma600i was used for the hd800s and other dynamic/planar magnetic cans that i auditioned so it might have been its dac.

and yes, i was referring to both the sr-l700 and sr-009. i hasten to add that all of the usual caveats apply.

And did you like these setups? I am a bit surprised by your findings. Are HD800s good with the cma600i? I own all of these headphones but with different setups and I prefer SR-009 over HD800 in the long run. I tried several amps with my HD800 (now with SuperDupont Resonator, i.e. close to HD800s) and I found HD800 greatest with my Leben CS600 and KT120 tubes. But I prefer SR-009 with KGSSHV Carbon over HD800 with the Leben. I do not listen to SR-L700 much so I am not absolutely sure about my SR-L700 vs HD800 relative likings but I prefer 009 by a distinct margin to them both in the context of my setups.

not enough to move from dynamics to estats. while i appreciated their clarity and speed, i felt that tonal saturation and note decay was a bit lacking compared to what i'm accustomed to hearing. it's just a matter of personal preference.

i did think that the hd800s was comparable in its presentation to the estats and bettered both for "soundstage". i suspect that it could be a more fatiguing listen in the long run tho. it sounded fine through the cma600i but i didn't try it on another rig for comparative purposes.

i should add that i found the lambda surprisingly comfortable.

probably doesn't need to be said, but a better amp would enhance things quite a bit...kgst, kgss, carbon...almost a necessity for bringing out the best in high-end stax...

In terms of detail retrieval and technical capability, I don't think there's one. Maybe the HD800s? Aside from that, different flavours? Sure. Better technically? I don't think so. The 007/009s on a spiced up setup. The new Orpheus is the best currently available IMO, but nowhere near this price range

Hmmm. I alteady have and am very fond of the HD800S. Reading back through the thread and others I thought that maybe the L700 would be more like the 009 and would offer something different. Maybe I should be happy with what I have...
