The Sony 40th Anniversary Walkman Thread

Hello lovely people! Please excuse my newb self, but I just read an Amazon review saying that Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon etc. services cannot store their libraries/offline tracks on the sd card and they will only store those tracks on the device's internal memory that's already been slashed in half by the OS itself. Is that true?

Can only speak for Tidal and Pocket Casts, but both those let you assign downloads to an SD card. Which streaming service do you use?

I'm sure someone will be able to confirm, but the apps are the standard Android versions – so as long as the app itself lets you change the download destination, you should be okay. The DAP itself won't stop you.

I have a piggy back question off of that one. If I download the music from Tidal to my SD card does the native music player pick it up? I know using any non-native music player will down sample the music to 16 bit. Not a big deal for me but just a curiosity I had.

The Sony app only plays your non-streamable music collection. All the Tidal stuff stays with Tidal.

I've run out of space for CDs!

hey guys. My first post on this forum. Decided that it would not be polite to just consume valuable information and do not produce anything in return

Special thanks to @psikey, @abitdeef, who were so active in this thread that literally made my decision to buy NW-A105 :flag_eu: and then NW-A106 :flag_jp:
Also to @Sonywalkmanuser for battery optimization guide

I decided to keep the post short and just highlight/confirm the most important points:
  • the battery is indeed pretty weak as for full android device but can nicely be optimized through tweaks
  • JP version is a must due to a much higher volume. EU version may suffice on sensitive IEMs on the most tracks, but on some tracks, it's definitely not enough. I would say 95-100 on JP corresponds to 120 on EU. 105 on JP corresponds to max volume on LG V30 (which is 75), see pictures below
  • there is a hiss on higher volumes, which initially bothered me quite a lot. I was surprised I couldn't find confirmation from other members. It starts to be hearable from 60+ volume and becomes not convenient from 105 and higher. Maybe all Sony fans already know it for many years and just do not bother anymore even to mention it. For me, it was something new, since I never had Sony (except for NW-A45, which had exactly the same problem). I know it's quite subjective and depends on the used gear. There is no hiss on my LG V30. Also, with JP version it's easier because max volume almost never wants to be more than 105 with my modest KZ ZS 10 pro
  • for those, who cannot decide between LG V30 and NW-A105 - physical buttons matter, at least for me. As well as size. Soundwise I find Sony a bit softer, which is rather an advantage. The battery is obviously better on V30

The more pictures I see of the A105 with the small square album art surrounded by blank space the more awkward it looks. For such an expensive DAP I would have expected the album art to be larger, there is certainly enough screen area for it. Is this for all album art or just streaming services?

Also does it for the Sony Music app. With Tidal, presumably it's a UI decision to make sure the playback controls are big enough for very small screens. Think it's okay.

Anyone knows which A105 comes with the included noise cancelling earphones?
I know you can buy it separately but I’d rather have it included. Amazon US mentions it’s included but from reviews and Q&As it’s not.
