The Sony 40th Anniversary Walkman Thread

How many hrs you use it in say two days ?

I haven’t test the running time yet, I received this battery yesterday, but I will run an informal test tonight. Probably this weekend I will leave it running to measure the exact time that this external battery last for on this DAP, but to be honest, the SQ is so good that it is going to be hard to leave it along only for the test...

I will post the results next week.

One of the reasons that I was looking to buy this Walkman was to have a small and simple DAP, I'm not super fan of big stacks, I wanted something small and simple. The internal battery will last long enough for a regular use if you disconnect wifi/Bluetooth and all the apps that are useless for a DAP, but if you need more battery time this configuration is small enough to fit in any regular pocket, or use this battery only to recharge it, it will charge very fast, probably in an hour or so.

Did anyone change EU firmware to say Japanese firmware and find it removes the EU volume cap?

What is the indicator that Japanese fw is being used...will it be stated in "About" section ?

When I imported my Japanese one the Welcome page defaults to Japanese and also after a factory reset. Also has some specific Japanese apps.

A good way to check if the volume cap is still there, is to watch for the "check the volume level" warning which should appear after a few hours of continuous listening.

After following the highs and lows of this thread, I've just ordered one of the Japanese ones on eBay (for the UK). Just curious, if I update the firmware over Wifi, do I have to worry about it downloading the EU version? Anyway, bracing myself for a bad battery but hopefully a nice compact driver for my hyper-sensitive Campfire Polaris 2s.

Did a test on the A105 standby battery life and got 132 hours from 100% to 8% in airplane mode with zero usage and only turning the screen on to check the percentage. I’ll run another test with it in use and report my results here.

I tracked the battery percentage every so often, here’s the results for anyone interested:

00 hrs - 100%
10 hrs - 97%
21 hrs - 89%
30 hrs - 83%
43 hrs - 73%
56 hrs - 65%
71 hrs - 53%
83 hrs - 43%
94 hrs - 36%
101 hrs - 32%
107 hrs - 27%
119 hrs - 19%
132 hrs - 8%

Using the Walkman app playing my own 24/96 FLAC files wired to my SE846's in airplane mode with nothing else running I got ~ 16hrs (no screen time or track skips). If you use a third party app this will likely half. Somehow the Walkman app is very energy efficient.

I'm basically after an upgrade for my hiby r6. Every dap seems to have their achilles heel though ruling them out. With the sony it's the potential battery life and possible volume cap, with shanling m6 it's no gapless atm on native app (seriously shanling in 2020?!?) and so on. The only other app I use apart from the native one is smartaudiobook player (or whatever its called) for audiobooks as no native app seems to have that facility any more :frowning2:

Its most reliable and best sounding I've used if needing streaming media services.

I actually think the Hiby R5 was good too but prefer Sony sound Sig.

In previous posts, I mentioned that I installed the JP firmware on an EU model. I didn't notice differences in volume but my device does have the "Mora" app and hasn't given me the "check the volume level" message since I made the switch (two updates ago). Maybe that's an indicator that it does remove it.

I bought my unit in Malaysia....does the fw (I have already upgraded to latest via wifi) have volume cap? I hope not and perhaps it is kind of hit and miss to monitor for volume cap like u said after few hours of listening ?

I know this is not the best solution, but at least this will extend the battery time of this little guy...

I just landed from a 10 hrs flight and use it continuously, alternating between Sony music app, Amazon HD off-line, some Bluetooth, and extensive screen use. It only dropped one of the four light of the external battery, around 25%. I'm sure that I can squeeze 48 hrs or more from a full charge if I only use the Sony app. The external battery could last for 48hrs, plus the internal battery for 8 or 10 more, so +50 hours is possible with the 5000 mAh external battery, and to be honest, it's very portable with this battery. I'm happy with this configuration for extended use, I can enjoy it without worrying at all about the battery. It would be ideal to last this long without the external battery but it wouldn't have Bluetooth, Wifi and streaming...

Hiya everyone, bit of a random question for you (sorry for OT):

I don't own a NW-a105 (I was tempted, but ended up going with a HiBy R5 instead).

However, one thing that I'm rather envious of from the a105 is the flip case (model CKS-NWA100, as seen here: https://www.makkyon.com/2019/11/13/sony-cks-nwa100/).

I often prefer flip cases because they offer built-in screen protection; additionally, this one can be used as a stand, which is a handy bonus.

I wish the R5 had a case like this (or someone willing to make a similar case), but there's nothing like it out there, sadly.

Looking at the dimensions for the a105 and the R5, they're rather close (although obviously not exact).

Here's my question (hopefully there are some owners of both here): is there any chance the Sony flip case would fit my R5?

I know that the R5 has buttons on both sides, but I'd be okay with that.
