THE SIGMA/404 A NEW STAX HEADPHONE?

Yamasinc/Accutech estimated US$75 for a Sigma/LNS parts swap (plus postage). Excellent value. I think I'll wait until the Omega 2 arrives in June

before I think about this conversion. The local (Sydney)distributor didn't seem terribly interested (I suspect they had never done one before).
Ed, we're still waiting with bated breath for that comparison....although I guess I don't have to decide until after June.

Speaking of which, what happened to him? http://www.mori****a.net/ is down. And last time i went looking for stax in a store in montreal (2005), they said the distributor closed down because the owner (was that him?) died and so they didn't have any left and don't know when and how they'll get new ones or who will take over distributing in canada. I would have asked Mori****a & Associates to mod my sigma but couldn't find them. Yamas inc said they'd do it for 650USD + shipping. That was for a lambda headband and earpads, 404 drivers and cable, and new foam inside. Is that the price they charged you, Ed?

By default, yeah, although to be more accurate there is no Canadian distributer right now.

About the same. The basic modification was about $500.00 but I paid more, because I needed a new headband as well. Of course if you don't need the new headband, then you can save some bucks.

The more I have listened to the 404 mod, the more I like them. All of the Sigmas have a remarkable sense of spaciousness. When I swap over quickly from a Sigma to a Lambda it seems as if the soundfield collapses with little sense of depth left.

I like all the Sigmas, the oldest, low bias, has a smoothness of sound, the pro has more oomph, but the 404 mod has the oomph plus a sparkle due to the increased treble and clarity.

I have no hesitation recommending it.

I'm thinking if i get the drivers off ebay and provide it myself it might come off cheaper than to have them put brand new 404 drivers. But right now i don't see any 404 drivers on ebay, but there are 202 drivers being sold regularly. I was wondering what the difference was between the 202 and 404, i hear the 404 got the better cable, but what about the drivers? Are they both the same? The 1.35 micron?

The drivers and cables on my sigma work fine. Heh, if they give them back, maybe i'm gonna make my own enclosure too, that would be ghetto. People will be like "what are those two bird houses on your head?" That's what i call killing two birds with one stone. Though wood would be a bit heavy hum...
