I just got these brand new out of the box from B&H photo, no burn in.  every song i have tried just blows me away.  I went from Grado SR80 to denon AH-D600's.  I wanted something bright like my grados but with a lot more bass.  I loved the denons bass and comfort but sometimes the bass overpowered the vocals.  Then I tried ultrasone 2400s but they bass was a tad to weak for me, and maybe a slight coloration i didnt like.  
 
I listen to my friends philip fideo x1's, T1, T5p, HD800, HD700, Audeze,  -- all great headphones but didnt impress me on value -- the x1s were close though.
 
These DT990s are comfortable, affordable, and just a joy to listen to thus far!

I'd have to agree with you OP.
 
I coincidentally also just got my DT 990 Pro's (250 OHM) today and I think they're absolutely incredible.

I also have a new amp (Schiit Magni) to go along with them and they sound absolutely incredible.
 
I already have a pair of HD 598's but I think I like these DT 990's even better.

The couple of times I have heard the dt990 I thought they were quite bad... The dt770 on the other hand has always seemed appealing to me.

Just say u are gonna sell the losers within a month.
( dun tell her u are gonna use the money to upgrade your other stuff..dac..cables etc)

Well what I do is just hide the old ones and not mention it.  As long as you're not on a budget then it's all good, in my opinion.
