Let's see....at a guesstimated (but probably conservative) lifespan of 5 years per tube, I might not have enough if I live past 700. Not likely that I will, but anything's possible. Worse, if I get an amp that uses a pair at a time, then I'd run out at 350. That's definitely cutting it too close.
Thanks but my eyes couldnt find any difference between the 2 tube types i.e the round getter base vs vertical. They look identical to me or am I looking at the wrong place.

Just to chime in to clarify some terms used, so people who are new to tubes might understand them correctly.
When we talked about getter, we are generally talking about the getter flash, that's the silvery coating on the inside of the glass envelope. When discussing about the shape of the getter, we are referring to the getter holder (metal structure that used to hold the barium before it was flashed onto the glass during the manufacturing process) and NOT the getter flash.
In this case, I believe @prima186 is talking about bottom getter flash(round getter) as compared to side getter flash (vertical getter).

The part is hidden by the getter, so it's hard to see the difference in the photos.
If you buy and compare "manufacturing tubes from the 1950s to 1964", you will immediately understand.
If you have a chance to buy, please compare.

Totally agree. Paired with a Tung Sol 5998 it's still my favorite input tube in the Incubus amp, and I've rolled a boatload of input tubes through that amp.
I remember just a few short years ago (before @Paladin79 began hoarding collecting the remaining world supply) you could get a pair for less than $150. Now it seems the entry price is $200+ for a single. And now that you've mentioned them, I'm guessing the demand spike will push prices above $400.

You finally learned the proper combo of tubes. All it took was a free amp and a free Melz tube and you just had to buy a 5998. Yesterday I took some time to swap my Melz collection into two Incubus amps, it took most of the day but it was well worth the adventure. Quality Melz tubes are now fetching $350 each, my collection is appreciating at a wondrous rate. I paid as low as $20 each before other people caught on. We totally agree on the tubes in the Incubus and I heard in excess of 1500 6sn7 equivalents in four Incubus test amps.

I was just commenting in another thread that the Schiit Vali 2 amp is the biggest bang-for-the-buck I've ever had. On further reflection, the Incubus beats it hands down.

I think the days of rolling premium 6sn7 tubes are mostly behind us now. The MOV/GEC/Marconi versions are selling for sick money as are the Brimars. The black glass round plate Tungsol Sol are getting close, Telefunken is nowhere to be found, and same for the Sylvania metal based 6sn7w. Now the best Russian tubes are rapidly climbing.
I’ve managed to still play in this game by using 12v and even 25v tubes but those are getting more difficult to find now. Even the premium 6j5 market is getting tough to find though the overall price is still lower than the 6sn7. I see an end in sight for my purposes thank God but glad I started buying a while ago.
