The Reference 6SN7 Thread

I was having trouble with some new GE 6bg6GA sounding really dark no matter which input tube I used. Decided to switch my preamp tubes from the Cossor 6c5g to the Marconi B36. ooh, that helped a lot. Now the Brimar branded (probably Philips) 12sl7 sounded a bit thin on the input. Tried the MOV BL63 and it was meh. Went looking for one of my favorite go-to tubes, the Raytheon 6f8g. Stumbled across a tube I have never had luck pairing anything with, the National Union 6f8g round plate.

That’s the stuff! The Marconi b36 in the preamp, NU round plate 6f8g input, and GE 6bg6ga with the large 6l6gc-esque plates sounds amazing in my SE amp. Very natural, clear, and detailed. I also have several of the round plate 7n7 which are supposed to be pretty much the same tube. I might try those in my push pull amp once I get the second pair of adapters for the 6bg6.

I have chance of getting some of my first Russian 6H8C tubes, no not the famous metal base ones rather the brown base and black base ones. So which ones to buy out of these 2. Amp is a Feliks Euforia and XDuoo TA-26.

I also have the "brown-based one".
According to the seller's explanation, it was "export specification".

In 1965, the 6H8C changed the structure of the "getter base".
The "vertical getter base" is highly evaluated for its sound quality.

Both made in 1965.
"Round getter" after change on the left.
The right side is "vertical getter"

Neither. If you're wanting Fotons, 1950's production is best, and by quite a margin over the late-60's and newer. IMO, of course.

Probably just a coincidence that owning 99.2% of all Foton's 50's 6H8C production weighs heavily on your opinion. 🤣
Only when I start selling them. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

But I’ll have to learn how to sell tubes first. Weird concept.

Yes... tubes are only meant to be hoarded herded heard. However, in your Fotonic realm, that's probably a 10 lifetime endeavour. Might have been easier to just spend 7 lifetimes mastering the sitar.

Let's see....at a guesstimated (but probably conservative) lifespan of 5 years per tube, I might not have enough if I live past 700. Not likely that I will, but anything's possible. Worse, if I get an amp that uses a pair at a time, then I'd run out at 350. That's definitely cutting it too close. 🤣
