The Reference 6SN7 Thread

I would consider TS bgrp as more linear compared to the warmer sounding Brimar CV1988.

Of course if you compare Sylvania 6sn7w metal base with TS bgrp then the TS becomes warmer. It's all relative.
In other words, it is all come down to personal preference. These are the TS, Melz and KR tubes I have sold so far...
1. TS 6SU7GT - 1 pair
2. TS 6SN7GT BGRP - 1 pair
3. TS 6C8G - 3 pairs
4. Melz 1578 - 3 pairs
5. Melz 6N8S - 1 pair
6. KR VT-231 - 2 pairs

BTW, if I would to listen to tracks from Eva Cassidy, Sophie Zelmani, etc...tracks with high clarity recording on TS 6C8G for over 2 or 3 hours, my ears will bleed...LOL
...not to mention, I run my system at an average of 12 hours daily, 365 days a year...unless I am on vacation.

Just waiting for my McChamplifier to arrive then I can try out my Lin Lai 6SN7 beauties. I originally bought them for my CJ MV60SE but they don’t fit side by side as the valve octals are too close together.

It does come down to personal preference in your chain. I'm not arguing you impression as I have never heard either tubes being discussed... But what Do you mean when you say "aggressive"? It does seem negative and that's not your intent. I'm really just trying to get a better vocabulary. Like I speak about how detailed "echo" is in my system. I know artificial reverb can be added, but I don't think I use the right words to describe that attribute... Air, space, echo. 🤷

It is just a misinterpretation...that most people dont quite understand...before you jump on me, again it is just my opinion...LOL
It is the same when people hear of the word, distortion, in audio. Most if not all will right away think of it as a negative interpretation.
Audio or sound engineer will say otherwise, not all distortions are bad. In fact, what we hear from a typical tube that is described as tubey, airy, etc...is a form of distortion.
Back to the word, aggressive...yeah, I cant think of a better word to describe it. IMO, I still think it is a simple and direct word to describe the sound signature of most TS tubes compared to say, the typical British sound from most British tubes. Tubes with aggressive sound signature do not necessary mean they sound bad. To me, it is generally referring to fast, dynamic, high clarity, heavy bass, etc...you get my point. Personally, I would prefer to use these tubes for fast and bass heavy music genre like heavy metal, rock, electronic, etc...You wouldnt want to use a tube with slow and extremely euphonic tone, would you? In other words, aggressive sounding tube can be good.
Yeah, I listen to a wide range of music genre from pop, heavy metal, rock, jazz, blues, folk, instrumental, classical, J-pop, K-pop (not that I understand what they are singing...LOL), anime, C-pop, etc...

P.S. the echo you describe is actually not echo but what sound engineer called harmonic distortion.

It does seem there are others who feel the same way about the word agressive. Certainly not a flattering word for a top tier tube. Dynamic would be more appropriate.

@TLO I get it it's all personal preference and system dependent. YMMV applies as always.

I do listen to Eva Cassidy, Sophie Zelmani and similar artists a lot.

So then isn't echo the same as artificial reverb they can add?
yes, they can add echo or artificial reverb in the recording...just another form of distortion. Where second, third, etc order harmonic distortion normally refer to the echo-like sound you hear during the final sound production played from your equipment.

What a name.

If your Ultima is the same as my Ultima (and why wouldn't it be) I would be excited for you. Never has an amp excite me so much that cost so little.

I’m adding my vote to the Linlai E6SN7. I would describe the sound as tastefully balanced. I have my details with my tube magic. I was already fine with my nos Raytheons but I’m glad I rolled these. They’re huge! As fat as 300bs. Thankfully they fit.

Using them in my Envy, as far as new production tubes go, they are probably the best

What 300b do you pair with the Linlai e6sn7?

I am waiting for a local store to receive their new shipment of Linlai e300b because I don’t think I can go wrong with partnering the Linlai e6sn7 with those either.

I'm using Linlai 300B-L blackplates and Fullmusic 300B for now.
I'm on the waiting List for Elrog 300Bs.

Linlai tubes were quite impressive so far, I'd also be interested in their E300B, WE300B Remake and 7300B-D ... but at first Elrog, and potentially this is all I ever need

Thankfully there’s a way for me to get a home trial of Elrogs where I’m at. I am sure they would be a perfect match to Linlai e6SN7. That and the Linlai e300B would be my two potential choices to pair with the e6SN7.

I want to try the ER300B and the Western Electric 300B from current production.

Maybe over the years some others, but these are the main choices.
As drivers the Linlai E-6SN7 Elite and RCA grey glass 6SN7

Seeing how big the Lin Lai 6SN7 is, I don't think it will fit in Ultima unless your chassis is bigger.
