Advice to OP:

Stop tallying after you have a decent sample (say, N = 200*), then do a poll on the top 10 cans.

*The N is necessarily arbitrary. There's nothing about 200 in particular. Maybe someone can come up with a less arbitrary number. 50% of the average no. of people online at any one time, maybe?

OK, the choices should follow Zipf's law, so let's find the break-point, perhaps more than the 10 most popular models, perhaps less, where 80% of the answers lie. At 100 samples, pick that cut-off, call it C. Then keep soliciting answers until you have at least 20 people voting for each of the top C phones (the order might switch around as you do this). Will take a lot more than 200 answers. I would guess 400 to 500 answers.

This is more accurate than using the sigs, since only current, motivated users will respond. Very interesting.

Interesting...are the 80%, n = 100, and 20 people all arbitrary? Or is there a standard? Also, what happens in the unlikely event of a headphone not in the top C suddenly hitting 20 before some of the top C ones? I've never even heard of Zipf's Law before now. Thanks for the heads up! Must brush up on stats...
