the port near the nozzle is for bass response. forgot where i read that but just curious

I made the custom molds and had the tape mod fully covered prior to the molds and just left in on. I haven't covered the outside vents, not sure this is recommended.

When I first got these baby (8320) and after trying multiple ear bud to get better seal ....quite frustrating because I was not getting the sound that everybody have been talking about ...did not try Comply Tips becuz buying them here locally or via eBay cost like USD40 and above which is more much expensive than the earphone itself . So made do with spare silicone bud that I have from other earphone ...still not satisfied with the sound as for my personal preference .. Only large size silicone bud works for me . Then decided to tape mod ...bass did sound did improved slightly but still wasn't near the kind of boom that I like. At this point ..the sound to me was the quite harsh in term of treble especially for some song but still I like the detail and the soundstage.

Burn In

Finally decided to burn for like more than 50 hrs + ... The bass did become more defined and treble did tame down a bit ...still not to par for me.

Cover up the vent on the outside

OK at this point ..spending too much time on these earphone trying to get that " SOUND" ...so decided to cover up the outside vent with material from cd cover material ...cloth like with hole in them ... Did make a different in the sound ..better bass and no more high treble .

Double silicone earbud

Just couldnt get a right fit ..after reading some suggestion from fellow headfier ..tried it with spare small size silicone bud with http://www.ebay.com.my/itm/Blue-New-Silicone-Replacement-Tips-Earbud-For-apple-MA850G-A-B-in-ear-headphone-/310679322476?pt=US_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item4855ee3f6c#ht_1561wt_689

Sound became more detailed with good sub bass and harshness of treble no longer there with slight reccessed mid range ...but to me .. I LOVE IT.

After doing all these ...then the realisation that "Sound" that I want after all the works and experimenting ...still have fitting problem ...cant used them for long period of time because some the sharp edge over time are just too much to ignore ...next step ...

File down all the sharp edges

Used nail filing to smooth out all the sharp edges and later used sand paper for final process. Takes me two day on and off just to get it right because you really need patience to file it down so that you get slightly round shape to the overall shape. Took out all the silver chrome coating and left with underlayer which is black. so decided to colour the right side only with silver paint to differentiate right and left.


Gave it a go ..with all these works done ...very happy camper until I started using it extensively when I go out everytime ...new problem ....the cable was just too noisy especially when you move and brush against the shirt....did a little web search...tie the earphone cable like frienship bracelet with strings to cure this microphonic noise.

All this experiment took like a month ...but in the end it was all worth it. Will post picture if anyone request for it.

You could have saved a lot of time if you had bought the 9927 model and worn them over the ear with some sennheiser double flanges off ebay. Good details with the changes you made though.

When all those DIY were done ...9927 was not out yet ...but come to think of it ...it was well worth it though at times wanted to give up.

It is definitely a good learning experience on the cheap. Fun & frustrating. Glad it paid off in the end.

btw you have the re-zeros how do they compare to the 8320s ?

I've had the re0 not re-zeros. They broke within a month and i couldnt be bothered to pay for shipping to ship them back. Really bad build quality. Bad experience for me especially for the price. 8320 are amazing for the price as the philips struggle to handle complicated tracks from metal songs while 8320 are able to compete iems from a higher price range.

This sounds like it could be the best mod I have come across for these and about 10 other pairs of IEM's I have.  How much does this help with microphonic's?

It is in imho ..to certain extent no microphonic noise but if you are the type that wear it over the ear ...then not recommended because with the cable do up this way ...not really comfortable and wont stay on the ear ...so it is a choice between no microphonic noise or preference in wearing your iem.

Also with the cable tied up like friendship bracelet ...advantages is that it is much easier to manage when keeping it in your bag or pouch ..easy to roll it up and not much untangling when taken out for use and also when using it outside ...u r sure to get many people looking at you and asking you where did you get them ...do it up to your favoirite colour

Working on my 3580 right now (terrible microphonics).  Man this takes awhile.  Need to hire a couple 10 yr olds that will work nothing.

if you make the molds small enough then there is no need for the tape mod except to prote ct the hole from mold....  but with a smaller mold you can still use the tape mod whenever you choose...i prefer no mods with the mold..
