I am very surprised so few of you mentioned Porcupine Tree.
As unbelievable as "In Absentia" is-I know its not classic Prog (some elements). However, what about their earlier stuff??

I would recommend you check out 'Signify' and going back earlier the newly remastered 'Up The Downstair'. Both are defintely more proggy than the newer metal-tinged stuff.

And on the subject of Adrian Belew, he also guests and plays a couple of schizophrenic guitar solos on Porcupine Tree's 'Deadwing' album!

When you say the psychadelic movement, you are referring to a specific time period, right?
I would definitely classify alot of Rush has done to be both purely Prog and psychadelic...not reallyt sure what you are referring to here, time period or overall genre music they play in?

The wikipedia article should be helpful for you...

Just finding all these prog related threads...:

My faves:

Camel! Camel! Camel! I love this band (can you tell?)
Steve Hillage
Todd Rundgren
Ash Ra (not Ash Ra Temple as much)
Happy the Man! (Craftyhands!)
Can
Banco Del Mutuo Secorso (amazing Italian prog)
Arti e Mestieri (italian prog, amazing as well)
Forget Genesis, check out Steve Hacket's Voyage of the Acolyte!
Gong (with Hillage, not with those lame jokester vocalists)
King Crimson (beat, three of a perfect pair)
Eloy!

Modern:
Djam Karet
Flower Kings / Tomas Bodin / Roine Stolt side projects

Note: These aren't prog 'metal' bands, so often, the only prog remaining today is of the dark, metal-ish category. I love my 10 minute pastoral interludes!

All of these can be metal or rock, I go more by 'progressive'

classics:
Yes*
King Crimson
Kansas*

Middle:
(some of the above)
Asia
Queensrÿche*

Modern:
Spock's Beard
Stradivarius
Dream Theater*

I've been meaning to get into DT more. I own almost all of Yes's cattalogue, and a good deal of Kansas's. I've seen the marked ones above live (*)

Harry-could you describe Camels sound? Do they sound similar to any other bands? I dont think ive ever heard a single song by them and would like to try out one of their albums...starting point suggestion?

I don't think I would be very good at describing their sound. Their sound is somewhat varied, depending on the album. I'd recommend going to the iTunes store and doing a power search for camel. You'll be able to listen to a large sampling of their music there. That's the best thing to do, since I think other people's descriptions can often be misleading.

I'm glad to see Marillion mentioned a couple times.

I don't have much to add as I have a hard time classifying a band as Prog (hell, a lot of the stuff I listen to I would say is progressive, but you can't really call it "Prog").
