So ive gone headfirst into Prog-Rock over the past couple of years and recently Ive been dabbling in some metal as well.

***Im not trying to put together ONE definitive list. I want YOUR favorites list so I and many others can see what bands you listen to.

I know theres about 30 types of metals out there...I want to stick to the avante-garde/futuristic/atmospheric metal groups here (under the heading Prog-Metal) becuase I feel they are the most accessible. (feel free to add more groupings, just make sure you put a header and maybe description at the top of that particular list).

I find this is single-handedly the best way to learn about new music...

Id like to to hear everyones favorites in the following four groupings (lets cap each list at ten names-and yes, that applies to both Enverxis and Asmox as well

):

1)Favorite classic Pro-Rock bands (late 60's 'till late 80's):

2)Favorite modern Prog-Rock bands:

3)Favorite classic Prog-Metal bands:

4)Favorite modern Prog-Metal bands:

***yes, some bands may cross over, so feel free to list them twice...

I know theres alot to list here-feel free to list one group or all four-goal here is to spread the wealth of musical knowledge so relative newbies like me can get into some good new sh***t.

Heres mine (dont have too many just yet):

1) Classic PR-
King Crimson-Discipline
Pink Floyd-Wish You Were Here
Rush-Moving Pictures

2) Modern PR-
Radiohead-OK Computer
the Mars Volta-De-Loused in the Comatorium
Porcupine Tree-In Absentia
Dredg (i know not classic PR, but still pushing boundaries)

3) Modern PM-
Tool-Undertow
Meshuggah-Chaosphere
Arcturus-The Sham Mirros
Isis-Oceanic
Opeth-Blackwater Park

EDIT: if you are going to list some bands, PLEASE put them into a category. Also, maybe list an album for each band; the one that you think would be the ideal one to purchase first (in order to get acclamated to that group's sound)

Thats all i got...school me!

In Flames (melo-death/gothenburg) is certainly not prog metal.

Neither is Ram-zet (black) or Isis (sludge), for that matter.

Other good picks are Pyramid and Royal Hunt.

And how did anyone forget Ayreon and Pain of Salvation?

Really? Interesting that you should be so certain about that. I'm just going on one source here, but allmusic.com has them in the progressive metal category...

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&searchlink=IN|FLAMES&uid=MIW03060101 2021&sql=11:51ud6ja871w0~T2

I'm not a big fan, but my understanding is that they've been through a few changes in sound and style and are a genuinely progressive modern metal band!?

I'd never trust genre-izing to a site like Allmusic, put quite frankly. Even Metal-Archives sucks for that.

They are not prog. Listen to Ayreon or PoS and tell me that In Flames has ever sounded prog.

kwitel - would it not have been an idea to list definitive album(s) with each band? Barring a few such as Opeth, Porcupine Tree and Tool, there are only certain albums worth getting by a particular band? Or are you just getting an idea for the artists to delve into before narrowing your search?

Unless ofcourse you have an endless stream of funds to buy every record by every band mentioned !!

Fair enough. It can't harm to put an artist or two on the list that may cross over into different genre's though can it? I was going to mention Nevermore and Mastodon, but they're more standard metal to my ears

Nevermore I could argue, though they're really mainly Gothic. Mastodon, though, not a chance. They wish they were prog, even maybe bill themselves as such, but they aren't.

Avantgarde Black/Gothic metal to be precise, music is progressive, so I listed it.
