Just saw this response from DOC2008 in regards to the MIX 1.2.2 sound with 1.2.8 FW

Listen all firmware. IMHO: 1.2.2 the best sound. Unfortunately in my MIX firmware I managed to get only 70-80 percent similarity with 1.2.2 sound. Chinese have made significant changes in the playback player on firmware 1.2.8. therefore transfer their player 1.2.8 to 1.2.2 quite significantly changes the sound of this firmware. We will dig deeper))

I've installed the new FW now (the 1.2.2 mod version) and all is well. The soundstage is huge and separation is extreme (in a good way). It may only be 80% of the sound (see above post) but as I never heard the original 1.2.2, I can't comment. I can comment that it sounds wonderful and I'm happy enough to stick with this now :) Not sure why they decided to change the font, but it works well enough...

  what do you do once you download the FW? my computer says i need a disk burner?

Just follow the same instructions as for the regular firmware, worked for me (bit of a gamble, admittedly!)

Instruction For Firmware update:
1, extract the zip file, and copy the update.img into the DX50;
2, once copied, safely disconnect the DX50 from the computer;
3, select Settings--->Advanced--->System update (the system update option appears only after the update.img is inside the DX50);
4, click °∞OK°± to start the firmware update;
5, the DX50 will reboot after firmware update completed.
6, select Settings--->Advanced--->Factory Reset to reset the DX50.  This is to avoid conflicts with residual settings from the previous firmware
7, delete the update.img.

No problem - but make sure you follow all the steps carefully AND that your DX50 is fully charged otherwise you can run into problems. It's easy to do and takes only 3 or 4 minutes, but you do have to follow all the steps..

Which FW did you come from?

  i asked them about this a while ago. they replied that it wasn't them conciously making the changes. The changes in SQ were coming every time they updated other aspects of the sound.
They said they could not replicate the different SQ as they hadn't made them and so could not make a user adaptable 'EQ' or user setting [at least to replicate the SQ on the FW's]
They are aware of this though so maybe...?

Can someone maybe ask the Russian programmer who is making the custom firmware if he knows exactly why the sound of the DX50 changes with each firmware version?  Is it because they were using unvinished "daily builds" of the audio codecs, as many have speculated, or is there another reason?

If the daily build/audio codec theory turns out to be correct, my guess is that it's Rockchip tha'ts making the mistake.  It would explain why Ibasso claim to know nothing about it.
