Been trying out my various headphones and IEMs with the DX50 tonight. My most recent purchase of IEMs was a set of Audeo PFE232. Gee these are nice to listen too. But on the DX they may be just a little bright in the top end. And although the W4Rs are the most neutral of the 4 I've been listening to, I have to say the Westone UM3X pair up nicely. The slightly elevated Bass, controlled treble and soundstage matches the DX very nicely. In last place were the Shure SE535LE. Just too forward in the mids. The Shures shine on iPhones and iPods but quality DAPs show up their signature's failings. Score 1 for the UM3Xs.
Of my headphones, my HD600s are so nice. And the adequate power of the DX50's amp does them justice. But of course you need a quiet environment due to them being open phones. Next tried were the Amperiors. I really like these phones as they have all the best characteristics of their brother HD25-II but with just a bit more bass making them more fun to listen too. As I listen to an equal amount of classical, jazz and popular rock, the Amperiors deal with more music genres than most other headphones making the versatile. I also like the Momentum On-Ears but they miss marks for their recessed mids which spoils them for my favourite piano sonatas and concertos. Love me for jazz though.
The surprise packet with the DX50 is Denon's AH-D600. I got them in a trade a few months ago and despite them being very comfortable they are fairly heavy and the large earpads mean resting my head in an armchair restricts head movement. So I don't wear them that often. But I've been listening to them for the past hour or so. While a little bass heavy for rock, I've been so enjoying them with my hires Beethoven for All Piano Concertos played by Daniel Barenboim.
In the end for full size headphones, the HD600 really are the best overall even unamped. So score 1 for them but I'd be just as happy with the D600 Denons if they were my only cans.
