The HeadAmp GS-X and GS-X MK2 Thread

Nods.  Dual 3pin is still just 4 wire.  Just makes for more weight, cost and messy cable.  A lot of builders have dropped the legacy dual xlr.

To use with my HD-600's, I have a 4 pin XLR custom cable which I use with my GS-Xmk2, however, before I ordered that cable, I asked a head-fier I have great trust in, which was best to go for, 4 pin or dual 3 pin, and he recommended the 4 pin.
He did give me the reason but I can't remember what that was.
I've only seen a couple of posts written by him this year so I'm not sure why that is, I think everyone will know who that head-fier is because he's very helpful, especially when it comes to Stax equipment.
I also didn't get a reply to the last two PM's I sent him, so I guess I might have done something to upset him, or maybe he's fed up of me asking him silly questions.

I was hoping the GS-X mk2 only had the 4-pin.  Dual 3-pin is a wast of space - and it looks bad imo..

Well Justin is using the dual-purpose plugs so there are your single ended plugs also - which are essential for FAD weird IEM fans of which I am one. They are functional and I personally don't think that they are ugly.

Fair enough. I personally am happy to have dual single ended plugs taking advantage of the dual mono configuration of the GS-X Mk2 That's because I have volume-matched IEMs that I can enjoy with friends. That doesn't apply to everyone though.

Hmm wait, the two SE outputs are driven independently? Wouldn't that mean they'll be phase inverted from each other? I thought it just split the output

The only reason the dual 3 pin XLR came into being is because the first "balanced" amp Tyll did for HeadRoom used separate left and right chassis (though they shared a common front and rear panel). That precluded using a single plug solution.

I think the real reason Justin installed the 3 pin connectors to the mk2, is to cater to a wider audience, lets face it the amp is not really for first time audiophilers, it's mainly for those who have been around for some time and who may have a collection of headphones which some maybe terminated dual 3 pin XLR

That said I will probably never use the dual XLR but happy to have it there if I do end up needing it.....

Yes. I was simply explaining how it got started in the first place.

I guess I stand corrected on the separate SE config. I thought that I had read that. I still think that there will be plenty of power to drive dual 160X IEMS so it works for me to have the two jacks. I also don't see any downside to balanced flexibility. For example, reasonably priced used dual plug cables are a potential option.
