The HD600... A Masterpiece! Is there anything that sounds more fun among neutrally biased cans in the price range?

I should hope they'd be better in each respect at four times the price.

That would be very wishful thinking...they are better because they are closed and look prettier =), other respects - it might be even a downgrade if not just a sidestep if we are talking well-amped HD650 vs Edition 9.

HD600 also becomes faster-paced and more aggressive with balancing, but does not gain the same great speed and soundstage as HD650, at least not to the same extent.

I hear this a lot, but not at all sure I agree that 650 scales better than the 600. Maybe - and maybe I just don't yet have a good enough balanced amp to tell. When the Bijou comes online with the Azur I'll report back. But likes me some balanced 600 better than 650, so far.

aaahhh but then again we are talking big bucks here for the balanced hd650 then good balanced amp. The price of that system is actually treading on omega2 waters

You should try HD650, but keep it mind that although it is more fun than HD600, it's not as neutral as HD600. That's the only down side of HD650 compare to HD600.

Its mid-bass will distract you at first, but when you're used to its presentation, you'll find that HD650s are more refined, have more details than 600s.

Yes. HD650 is richer in the midband. HD600 is a little lean there. I don't think anything is neutral, but HD650 must be commended for it's lack of resonances and fine attempt at a solid, musically pleasing balance.

Not hardly - my balanced rig, cables and all was <$1100... then throw in a $1-2k++ amp for OII, and you are north of $3k, closer to $4k. The OII are worthless without a GOOD amp to drive them - no difference from HD6x0. Or, HEx0...

oh, ok i thought the o2 cost 3,500 for the whole set including amp. So balanced 650 is how much? then add a 1500 to 2000 dollar amp. sounds expensive hehehe

I'm surprised I haven't gotten people posting dt880 or k701 is better on this thread. Are the k701s and dt880s just clinical sounding or is there anyone that can say that they have a funner sound than the hd600s

x2

I now listen to my balanced HD600 more than my RS-1 and Edition 9, while before I got my balanced amp 5 weeks ago I was using the HD600 the least of my dynamic cans.

Best bang for the buck would be to get a Headroom balanced desktop amp with built-in DAC, and a nice balanced cable (even if you have to start with a $25 HD650 cable that you install the XLR plugs on yourself while you save for a good cable). My new production Single Power Square Wave XL Balanced sounded a little better at the Colorado meet than the Headroom did, but it's $200-300 more without a DAC included. The Headroom balanced desktop still brings the HD600 alive.

they have different strengths, but the hd600 is definitely more fun than those 2 imo.
