It should be, otherwise it is downgrade. They upgrade the DAC chip from PCM5142 to PCM5242. Yes, it plays 24/192 FLAC.

I would doubt it would sound better than the X3 despite upgrading the chips used considering the X3 is the better DAP of the two...just saying.  I'm sure it may sound better than the original X1, but the X3II is definitely better sounding than the current X1 and it would make no sense for them to make the entry level DAP better sounding than their mid-fi DAP.

My mistake. I thought he is comparing X1ii with X1.

So the X1II sounds better than the X3II, the X3III would sound better.

I guess you can look at it that way, but once again the X3II is still in a current product run so it would make no sense to make your entry level DAP (X1 or X1II) sound better than your mid-fi DAP like the X3II.  I'm not going to speculate about an X3III, but it's probably safe to say it will have some of the new features and hardware that the X1II has.

From a technical standpoint it's my understanding that James FiiO personally sprinkled some newly discovered magic dust on all of the inside parts of each and every X1 Gen 2 player. But in all honesty that doesn't change the fact that I'm listening to Stevie Wonder right now.

I'm wondering if by touch wheel do they mean it is like what was in the iPod classic? Not a wheel that actually moves just something like a touch pad? I'm still not clear on whether the whee moves or not..

It doesn't look like it moves and if I'm understanding what I've read it's purely touch and nothing moving other than your finger to scroll.

I will say that the X1II looks very impressive.  I may pick one up just to try out.  If the price stays close to the $99 the current X1 is at, then it's a good chance I will.  I'm also impressed it will handle the 256 gig cards.  Bluetooth would be nice for exercising for sure.  Hopefully, the UI won't require a whole bunch of fw updates to get it right.  The pics of the UI appear to be upgraded version of the current fw's in use by the X series DAPs so in theory it should run smooth and be stable right out of the gate (fingers crossed).

I want to buy a X3 ii the next week, and I think that the new X1 model should be in one step down comparing with X3 too. But I am afraid with the posibility that the new version of X3 coming soon. What do you think about? It's important for my the USB DAC feature.

It seems like Fiio is really refining their DAPs. Look how far they have come from the original X3 to what is coming up now. I expect the X1II to be pretty bug free right from the start.

If you need the DAC feature, and you're going with FiiO, then you have to go with the X3II, X5II, or X7.  I don't have any knowledge, but I believe it will be next year before we see an upgraded X3II or X5II based on what FiiO has said about their product runs here on Head-Fi.
