Because if you plug your headphones into a line-out, which by default is at full power - instant ringing ears.  Not recommended.

for a lot of reasons, line outs aren't some "better headphone out" that a clever audiophile thought to use while everybody else is an idiot. ^_^
- the line out is probably above 100ohm so plugging an IEM into it wouldn't be so great.
- the line out outputs 1.5V on the X1, when many IEMs are well above 100db loud with 1V. so you might damage your IEM and most likely your ears.
- the line out bypasses a bunch of stuff because it expects to be plugged into several thousands of ohm(all amplifier inputs are in that range) so that current will never be a concern and only voltage precision matters. it isn't the case with an IEM so in most situations the signal will actually go bad because the DAP may not be able to provide enough current for the headphone.

and that's why some outputs are headphone out, and some are line out. and while most(but not all) headphone outs may be very fine plugged into an amp, a line out plugged into a headphone will almost never be fine as far as signal fidelity is concerned.

Hmm ok.....been using LOD cable for my classics, touch and iPhone 3G....And never tried connecting HPs either thru LO of 601LE....

It has happend to me before not the best experience lol

It happened to me too but with the X3ii. I for some reason plugged my IEMs into the line out instead of headphone out and man that hurt! talk about ringing ears. So having a separate HO & LO isn't necessarily fool proof...emphasis on the fool.

A few days ago I started a thread called "Are DAP's outdated"? and a few of us had an interesting discussion about it.

But after spending time with a few of FiiO's DAP's, I have to say the X1 is a winner. Like many people in the various threads, the sound is so close to one another in terms of clear and solid audio quality.

Some can notice a difference, some can't. (may all of our ears vary!)

But I did a test with some Sony MDR-V6 HP's and the X3II and the X1 both plugged straight in, no amp. Both players had the same song and the same file at the 80 volume level. The X3II needed to be pumped up to 90 to match volume levels, the X1 was clear as day and just beautiful sounding.

They both sounded great, but I kinda preferred the X1 as it sounded 'cleaner' to me.

Now take in account this is only my ears and what I'm hearing. I have to say it again like so many have said before, if you're going to want a separate DAP everything from it's price to its superb sound quality.

The FiiO X1!

May the MUSIC and the love continue.

I love my X1, but needs change.  I needed additional features (most importantly usb otg) and the X1 did not have them.  I just ordered the X3II yesterday and I am patiently waiting for it.  With that said, the X1 is an excellent DAP and will still be my go to DAP while exercising and for my car.  My music collection has grown quite a bit over the past couple years and I even started buying and ripping my own FLAC files, so I needed the ability to be able to access it all without having to switch micro cards all the time or adding and deleting files regularly and that's where the X3II comes in.  Truthfully, all FiiO DAPs are excellent IMO and they seem to make a DAP for everyone (budget fi, mid fi, & top tier).  I can't wait to see what FiiO comes up with next.

Well said.

It really is very cool to be part of the ride as they evolve, all the while off to a great start! I really do think they are listening (as well as directly communicating!) to this community and based on that direct feedback will be adding, changing and designing their near future releases. In any business the customer base is the obvious and essential part of the failure or success of the company.

But in this case it's more direct and personal.

How awesome is that!?!

I have both Fiio X1 and a Sony A15.

While I believe the X1 has a small edge in terms of sound quality over the Sony A15, navigating my 8000+ songs stored in my 128GB micro SD is a pain in X1, and for this reason the A15 is my preferred player at this moment.

I am hoping that in the next firmware upgrade Fiio implements page scroll with auto-repeat for the previous/next buttons for all UIs (specially in the folder browsing if they do not remove the 5800 musics limit). I don't think this is a Sony patent. Page scroll is in all computers since the beginning, and I cannot understand why Fiio does not implement such basic feature.

However, since I didn't hear about this feature in the X3 II and X5 II (which are the higher-end Fiio players), I am not holding my breadth, and for this reason my X1 will remain unused.

I wish the X1 equalizer would also go up to +9db (instead of the current +6db). The Sony "Clear Bass" is outstanding, and depending of the headphone and/or music I am listening, this is the only sound "improvement" I use (bass boost), and Sony wins hands down in this area.

It could be an issue with the USB cable that you're using. At least, you should hope it's an issue with the cable rather than an issue with the ports on your Mac and/or X1 :P

I'm using the cable it came with and it doesn't happen with other external drives or devices. I just don't want it to mess up my MicroSD card and all the songs on it! But this is while nothing is transferring and doesn't happen all the time. I noticed it once or twice.

It doesn't matter if the cable came with your X1, it can still have problems.

Either way, I recommend using a memory card reader instead of a USB cable, as it'll offer better transfer speeds.
