X1 is awesome, I plug in all sorts of headphones like Grado, IEM's, it never misses a beat and keeps soldiering on, it has a nice smooth sound good for long listening. I quite like it's headphone out but very much line out with a decent amp. Of course, there are limitations but if you don't try and make it perform higher than expectations of a $100 product, it's a true star of the budget DAP world.

Been using the X1 with the Kilimanjaro 2 and stacking kit, then tried it again without the amp, and it's just as good. Nice little gadget, can't fault it for the money
FiiO E11K fantastic amp! I like E12A Mont-Blanc much better!! :D

I really appreciate this low cost budget DAP. The amount of work put in, the documentation, extra stickers, cable, silicone case... really, I feel Fiio X1 is really worth it. Just stating what hopefully can be improved

Yep. It's a very good product, just feels like something obvious has been missed. Just as an example, I can get to the stuff in the middle of my library using the Clip+(which is considerably cheaper) with stock firmware more quickly than I can with the X1(the scrolling speeds up), and with Rockbox you have alphabet mode(and increasing-speed scrolling also). Maybe the X1 could have that when scrolling via the skip buttons. I've been using this thing as an iPod Shuffle lately, which isn't bad in its own right but this thing is meant to be more than that.

As a UX OCDer I agree. The software needs a lot more work. In an ideal world the X1 will have rockbox - highly unlikely at this point though.

I love the X1's design, build and sound quality but I find myself going back to my clipzip more and more often, solely because using rockbox is a much better experience and I have a lot more freedom with the themes.

But why? Cuz of the SQ?

yeah, plus the amp which will matter for multi driver iem's.

Although s3 too has wolfson WM1811 so i guess it already has 24 bit support.

But have a look here before getting it

I have an ath a900 (not the x) and it seems fine to me. Gets a good grip of the headphone and no noise. In fact, I'm selling my a900 but now you've mentioned it, I might keep it!! Good headphone, but there's no really deep bass with them. That's not the X1, it's the headphone.

Yeah my priority right now in headphones is a good sound stage, forward midrange, and tight non intrusive bass. Pretty much any headphone in the AD series. I'll probably end up going with the 700x tho

Edit: plus no amping. It was a split decision between these air series and the Q701. I'm on a tight budget right now but once I get more stable I'll probably get me the Q701 and relegate the audio technicas to gaming duty

I was thinking about the X1 but I have over 5,000 songs and I want a player that has 128 GB capacity so I passed on it.

???

X1 can take 128 Gb cards, and has a capacity of 5800 songs (if using the library tagged), and no limit if using folder browsing.  Seems it meets both of your requirements ......
