1 - lust
you've seen the pictures. you've read the reviews. you found the lowest price. no amount of common sense is going to stop you from dropping hundreds of dollars on ANOTHER pair of headphones.

2 - doubt
you just bought them. did you make the right choice? do you REALLY need another pair of headphones?! you think, "my god, what have i done?!"

3 - arrival
your headphones arrive in the mail. it's christmas and you are 9 again. you tear through the package, you carefully unpack the headphones, you revel in the new-headphone-smell, and you plug them in for your first listen...

4 - disillusion
...and think, is this sound really worth $400? jeez, it sounds a bit muffled/bright/boomy (etc..).

5 - buyer's remorse
i can't belive i spent $400 on these!! what a sucker!

6 - burn in
i'll just burn them in a few days...

7 - illumination
WOW! these really DO sound good!

8 - review
gosh, head-fi really needs to know how these compare with my old v6. i think i'll write a review--maybe that will help with my lingering buyers remorse...

I definitely agree with those eight steps, i'm listening to a pair of borrowed stax and i'm dying here, they sound amazing! I can't wait to get mine!

Hm I agree with a lot of that, except the doubt... I don't really doubt my purchases that much (except for some of these stupid tweaks I spent my money on... equipment isolation, BAH!)

Get rid of 2, 4, 5, and 8.

Where's "denial"? Or maybe that's the audio equivalent of turning a blind eye.

Don't get me wrong, I love my HD600, but I will not say it's perfect. Perfection does not exist!

Hey, where's "Bliss Out"? That's where I am, man!

I think my list is simpler:

1. Arouse curiosity, doubt, desire to prove wrong the glowing reviewers.
2. Purchase. Wait. Plan next upgrade.
3. Listen and decide which to post first, the scathing review or the for sale ad.
Repeat.

This is a parody, but only barely. I wonder if I'll ever be satisfied.
